The Property Rights Alliance congratulates Christopher Snowdon (Institute of Economic Affairs, UK) on the white paper “The impact of COP9 on vapers.” This paper brings to light the contra–dictions between the mission to reduce tobacco consumption and the policy recommenda–tions put forth by the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Conference of Parties (COP) within the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

This international treaty claims to serve as a public health guideline but promotes an ideolog–ical agenda against successful quit-aids like e-cigarettes (ECs) and vaping as well as reduced harm products.

Back in February I wrote a piece for Inside Sources titled “Bloomberg’s Philanthro-Colonialism: A Threat to Global Health and Science,” criticizing the behavior of anti-tobacco groups funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies in low- and middle-income nations (LMICs). For those unfamiliar with Bloomberg’s initiative against tobacco—now expanded to target the use of any non-pharmaceutical nicotine—the headline might come across as sensationalistic. But internal communications from the group orchestrating that initiative, recently obtained by CEI, show the true extent of its influence, which reaches throughout all levels of civil society, media, and even government, and appears aimed at imposing its will on the developing world, regardless of the needs and interests of the people who live there. Worse, it often provides funding to foreign government entities, seemingly without much regard for those governments’ level of respect for liberal values and democratic governance.

£1.7million grant funds world-first LSBU e-cigarette trial to help homeless quit smoking

The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has awarded a £1.7M grant to LSBU to conduct a trial looking at whether e-cigarettes could help people experiencing homelessness to quit smoking.

The research project is led by Lynne Dawkins, Professor of Nicotine and Tobacco Studies from the Centre for Addictive Behaviours Research at LSBU’s School of Applied Sciences and Dr Sharon Cox, Senior Research Fellow at UCL’s Department of Behavioural Science and Health.

We agree with the authors of the June 8 opinion article, Alberta’s vaping legislation sits in limbo as COVID exacerbates e-cigarette dangers, in one very important area: kids should not vape. That’s where our agreement ends.

The authors (a medical school professor and two medical students) deride the Government of Alberta for not putting in place legislation that will somehow, miraculously, solve the youth vaping. They fail to mention that there are already laws on the book both federally and provincially that make it illegal to sell vapour products to minors.

This year it attracted more delegates, and dare I say it a few more of the big guns, which reflects the importance that this conference is gaining. Hon Lik the inventor of the modern day e-cig was there – (yes, there was much awe in the room when he spoke!) but also Dr Derek Yach, the man who was responsible for leading the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control….

Would nicotine e-cigs work as quit aids in NZ?

New Zealand researchers have found that Kiwi smokers using nicotine e-cigarettes for the first time rated them 83 per cent as highly as own-brand tobacco for liking and satisfaction and that females tended to rate them more highly than males. The authors say that their findings suggest that e-cigarettes that contain nicotine – currently not available in New Zealand – may be useful for nicotine replacement therapy with female smokers….
