SFS Slams the Tax
Smoke Free Sweden (SFS) has joined the World Vapers’ Alliance in expressing its serious concerns about Poland’s newly approved plan to tax nicotine pouches and vaping devices at similar rates that are applied to traditional tobacco cigarettes. The Council of Ministers endorsed a draft law that could, starting this July and August, impose steep excise duty on reduced-harm alternatives, and SFS says this will undermine efforts to lower the country’s smoking rates.
One in 20 are Dual Users
One in 20 adults in England are dual-users, people who both smoke and vape, according to a new study by University College London (UCL) researchers. The paper, published in the journal Addiction and funded by Cancer Research UK, looked at survey data between 2016 and 2024. It found that the proportion of people both smoking and vaping rose from 3.5% (about one in 30) to 5.2% (about one in 20) during this period, with a sharp rise from 2021, when disposable e-cigarettes first became popular.
Christopher Oldcorn, Western Standard
A recent study published in the Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention Journal by the Public Health Agency of Canada showed the potential of flavoured vaping products as a tool to assist Canadian adults in quitting smoking cigarettes. The analysis, part of the 2022 International Tobacco Control Four Country Smoking and Vaping Survey, involved 1,771 adults who currently smoke or have recently quit.
Vaping is NOT associated with long Covid while smoking IS, new study finds
Ali Anderson, Clearing The Air
Vaping is not a risk factor for the development of long Covid, a major new study has found. The Covid-19 pandemic caused many sufferers to experience long-lasting symptoms including fatigue, breathlessness and cognitive issues. Both smoking and vaping have previously been associated with a higher risk of post-acute Covid-19 syndrome (PCS) – more commonly known as ‘long Covid.’ However, a new scientific report published in the journal Nature has revealed that vaping is in fact not a risk factor for PCS (which is defined as having Covid-19 symptoms for more than three months).
Antonia Di Lorenzo, Ecig Intelligence
France’s decision to ban disposable vaping devices aligns with Europe’s escalating efforts to tackle youth vaping and reduce environmental harm from single-use products, positioning the country as one of the key players in the growing push for stricter vaping regulations across the continent.
Top supermarkets running ‘prohibited’ tobacco ads
Ben King, BBC
Sainsbury’s and Morrisons are displaying adverts for tobacco products in their stores which Trading Standards says are against the law. Video screens and posters promote devices that deliver nicotine by heating tobacco rather than burning it. The two supermarkets say they believe the laws banning tobacco advertising do not apply to the devices.
Will banning disposable vapes encourage more smoking?
Brett Ellis, Watford Observer
It’s a well-worn, and utterly predictable path, to publicly criticise politicians. But the stereotype still stands: Literally to a man, woman or them, they are generally highly academically intelligent, but droid like, as they brown nose with the best to feather their own nests and climb the party power ladder to reach their level of incompetence, which, eventually, most of them manage.

Documentary Shows How Sweden Defeated Cigarettes
Claudio, Substack
Sweden achieved the seemingly impossible: reducing smoking to just 4.5% of its population, compared to the European average of over 24%. How did they do it? The documentary How Sweden Quit Smoking reveals the secret lies in an evidence-based approach that prioritizes harm reduction over prohibition—a lesson the rest of the world cannot afford to ignore.

The Overreaction to Nicotine Pouches: A Missed Opportunity for Harm Reduction
The South Australian Government has taken a hard line against selling nicotine pouches in recent months, with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) supporting this crackdown. Dr John Williams, President of the AMA in South Australia, voiced his concerns, highlighting that nicotine pouches are unregulated and could pose unknown risks, particularly to young people. While these concerns are understandable, they miss the larger, more important issue: harm reduction for adult smokers. By focusing primarily on the potential dangers of nicotine pouches and neglecting their role in helping people quit smoking, we risk pushing smokers back to more harmful behaviours.
Minister for Health and Aged Care press conference 31 January 2025 – A breakdown of Butler’s press conference with analysis, a critical response.
The statements made by Minister Butler and Minister Picton regarding vaping are alarmist, misleading, and dangerously out of touch with the realities of public health. Their rhetoric relies on sensationalist fear-mongering rather than evidence, and their policies are flawed and likely to do more harm than good. Let’s dissect their claims and expose the truth. I also take a look at the role of the MSM and journalists.
What the MSM is not doing to change the narrative about vaping.
If you ever needed proof that press conferences are carefully stage-managed performances rather than spontaneous exchanges of ideas, look no further than the recent media spectacle on vaping in Australia. The questions asked by journalists weren’t just predictable; they were carefully shaped to ensure the government’s anti-vaping narrative remained unchallenged. Let’s be clear: journalists weren’t handed scripts to read. But they might as well have been. The illusion of free inquiry is maintained while, in reality, the questions serve as a tool to reinforce official messaging. The government sets the stage, provides the talking points, and the media obediently plays along.
Democrat-Controlled Trade Tribunal Rules Against Menthol Vape-Maker, Contravening Trump’s Opposition to Menthol Bans
Chuck Ross, The Washington Free Beacon
A little-known, Democrat-controlled trade tribunal ruled against the maker of the country’s only FDA-approved menthol e-cigarettes, a controversial decision that seemingly defies several aspects of the Trump administration agenda. The commission issued the ruling before President Donald Trump could fill two vacant positions at the tribunal, which is required by law to have an equal number of Democrats and Republicans.
Experts Discuss The Possible Repurcussions of the United States’ Withdrawal From the WHO
Diane Caruana, Vaping Post
Picking up where he left off in 2020 before the change of administration, earlier this month Trump reintroduced a bill which would withdraw the United States from the WHO. The U.S. has historically been a key player in global health policies, including tobacco control and harm reduction efforts. However, with its decision to withdraw from WHO, there are significant implications for the future of THR policies worldwide.
John Daley, Denverite
A group of opponents to Denver’s ban on flavored tobacco has filed paperwork with the city clerk and recorder’s office to try to overturn it. A committee of five people, including Phil Guerin, who owns a vape shop on Colfax Avenue filed an affidavit for a proposed referendum. The clerk’s office reviewed the documents and approved the circulation of petitions, giving the green light for the group to collect signatures. After a contentious debate last fall, Denver’s city council passed the ordinance in mid-December; Mayor Mike Johnston signed it a couple of days later.

There are over 100 million users worldwide of safer nicotine products (SNP). Many will have struggled to find the right option for themselves, friends or family, or any option at all. Many will have obtained nicotine products illegally, smuggled into the country or bought under the counter.
The Western War on Vaping
Is Harming Public Health – Theo Menon
Most people who work on the topic of tobacco harm reduction are aware of the potential advantages of e-cigarettes in helping adults who smoke break their deadly smoking habit. Experts in the field often repeat the conclusions from Britain’s top public-health agency (Public Health England), which found that vaping is at least 95 percent less harmful than smoking combustible cigarettes.
