Two from Dave Cross, Planet of the Vapes:
ASA Rules on Juicemate
The Advertising Standards Authority has made a ruling against Pixus Online Ltd, trading as Juicemate, in relation to the promotion of electronic cigarettes through affiliate schemes. The issue was identified following an Advertising Standards Authority investigation to gather intelligence about the way vape companies are operating.
The Advertising Standards Authority said that Juicemate’s website, www.juicemate.co.uk, advertised an electronic cigarette brand with a section of the website titled “Vape Affiliate Program”. The page was viewed on 17 January 2024.
Parliament’s Back
Parliament is back, with MPs appointed to all of the positions in the Department of Health, and the fight for evidenced-based vape policy resumes. With Karin Smyth and Stephen Kinnock in place, Andrew Gwynne was added to the team to oversee the government’s approach to tobacco control and tobacco harm reduction.
First to be announced, Karin Smyth was announced as the Minister of State for Health (Secondary Care) and Stephen Kinnock as the Minister of State for Care.
Tobacco Control’s Limited Empathy …
For Smoking “Victims” – Joseph Hart
Tobacco control is obsessed with teen nicotine use. If it’s not statistical sleight of hand to disguise ever use as daily use, it’s outdated figures or anecdotes for hire. The media are only too happy to go along with or amplify the construction of the alleged nicotine “epidemic” because it gets clicks from busybodies with a lot of time on their hands.
One of their most common refrains about Big Tobacco is that they’re “hooking a new generation of nicotine addicts”. The thinking here is simple: if you don’t use nicotine as a teenager, you’re less likely to use the stimulant as an adult. Therefore, per tobacco control, if these products are not in circulation, then nicotine use rates will plummet.

Another Key Unlocking the Pearly Gates …
Of Fearland – Kim “Skip” Murray
The merry band of citizen scientists who volunteer their time at the Safer Nicotine Wiki (SNW) are hard at work seeking more data on reduced-risk nicotine products.
Their latest page is called “Myth: Alternative nicotine products are a gateway to smoking.” The team wanted to see if there is proof that vaping (and other reduced-risk products) is a gateway to smoking (and other things). They also wanted to learn if policies meant to reduce the risk of a gateway have unintended consequences.
Could International Human Rights …
Mechanisms Take Down Vape Bans? – Jeannie Cameron
Could international human rights mechanisms be successfully used to contest government-imposed bans and restrictions on nicotine vapes and other safer alternatives to smoking?
I’ve been researching how elements of two international treaties—each adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1966—might enable a legal challenge to damaging prohibitions, which deny millions of people ways to improve their health.

Vaping Tied Reduced Smoking Prevalence
Tobacco Reporter
A new analysis conducted on the latest available U.S. National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data through 2022 showed that population-level data suggest that smoking prevalence has declined at an accelerated rate in the last decade in ways correlated with increased uptake of e-cigarette use.
Since their market introduction, the question of whether combustion-free products could be a useful tool in the fight against cigarette smoking or simply a substitute has divided the scientific community. Over the years, technological innovation and the development of various products on the market have modified the health risk parameters related to the use of these tools, creating the basis for a redefinition of public health policies.
PEI’s proposed generational tobacco ban
Ignores positive impact of tobacco harm reduction tools – Lindsey Stroud
The Prince Edward Island government’s proposal to ban the sale of tobacco products to individuals born after a certain year is a bold but potentially misguided attempt to curtail tobacco use.
This measure overlooks significant declines in youth tobacco use and may inadvertently support efforts by nongovernmental organizations to ban less harmful tobacco harm reduction (THR) products. Instead of implementing sweeping bans, policymakers should focus on promoting THR products among current adult smokers and educating youth about the harms of tobacco.
Will new vaping laws be a boon…
For the black market? – Dr Norman Swan
New vaping laws are in place, but questions remain about whether they will address the health problems at play.
Both non-nicotine and nicotine vapes are only available through a pharmacy, and only to those over 18 years of age.
But some experts are concerned this could expose young people to a growing illicit market
Why Kenya Needs Separate Policies …
For Nicotine and Tobacco
As the landscape of nicotine and tobacco products evolves, traditional tobacco control policies are increasingly challenged by the emergence of new products, such as e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and heat-not-burn devices. These products, while still delivering nicotine, often present different health risks compared to conventional tobacco products. This has led to calls for separate policies addressing nicotine and tobacco, recognizing their distinct characteristics and potential impacts on public health.
Nicotine, while addictive, is not the primary cause of tobacco-related diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and respiratory conditions. These health issues are largely linked to the combustion process in smoking, which releases harmful toxins.

Sunak underscores vapes
As safer alternative to cigarettes – INQUIRER.net
Advocates of public health in the country applauded UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for promoting vaping as a much safer alternative to smoking cigarettes and establishing groundbreaking programs that “encourage adults to make informed choices rather than imposing bans that leave them with limited options.”
“No less than a leader of the free world has proclaimed that vaping is a better choice for those who can’t quit smoking. There is so much science and research today that back up his claim. We congratulate Prime Minister Sunak for doing the right thing in protecting the British people’s health,” Clarisse Virgino, the Philippine representative to the Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA), said.
Let’s talk e-cigarettes
July 2023 Joanna Streck
Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Dr Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Assistant Professor of Psychology, Joanna Streck, from the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in the US. Joanna Streck talks about her new study looking at the feasibility, acceptability and preliminary effects of switching from combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes in individuals in treatment for opioid use disorder. The trial name is: Switching Individuals in Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder Who Smoke Cigarettes to the Standardized Research E-Cigarette (SREC).
The goal of this study is to conduct a pilot randomized waitlist-controlled trial to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of substituting the National Institute for Drug Abuse standardized research e-cigarette (SREC) for combustible cigarettes in people who use medications for opioid disorder and combustible cigarettes who are not ready to quit smoking.
