Three From Dave Cross, Planet Of The Vapes
New Data Contradicts Scaremongering
New data from Smoke Free Sweden highlights that youth vaping rates in New Zealand are falling sharply while youth smoking continues to decline to historic lows contradicting the anti-vape scaremongering. “The New Zealand data shows the ‘gateway’ theory does not stand up to real-world evidence,” Dr. Delon Human, leader of Smoke Free Sweden and former Secretary-General of the World Medical Association, told Planet of the Vapes.
Bang the Bangladesh Ban
The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) told Planet of the Vapes that Bangladesh’s review of its sweeping 2025 ban on vaping and other safer nicotine products is a chance to replace rushed prohibition with smarter, enforceable tobacco harm reduction policy.
Underage Sale Enforcement Failure
With the Tobacco and Vapes Bill now officially law and youth vaping back under the spotlight, new UK-wide data reveals major failures in enforcing underage vape sale regulations. Key findings from a new survey show that Dorset Council and Herefordshire Council both recorded 100% failure rates since 2022/23, with other councils returning sustained failure rates.
The False Choice in the Vaping Debate
Cliff Douglas
The FDA today announced enforcement actions against retailers selling illegal nicotine products, including nicotine pouches and dissolvable tobacco products designed to resemble everyday items such as candy, breath strips, and cough drops. While the targeted products in this instance are oral products, the action is the kind taken previously against some illicit vaping products for similar reasons. The debate that follows is the same.
The Stigma Doesn’t Help Us Quit
The Nicotine Project
I was sent a video on Instagram today. And comedian Ryan Belleville nailed it.
There’s something strange that happens when you tell people you smoke. Or that you used to smoke. Or that you’ve switched to something else.
Suddenly, you’re not just a person anymore, you’re a problem to be judged, corrected, or looked down on.
The FDA today announced enforcement actions against retailers selling illegal nicotine products… Both responses miss something important.
They Knew: The Government’s Own Documents Predicted Australia’s Vape Disaster
Alan Gor
There is something uniquely damning about a policy failure when the warnings were not merely ignored by outside critics, but openly acknowledged in the government’s own regulatory documents before the policy was even implemented. That is what makes the TGA impact analysis, regulatory papers, and FOI documents surrounding Australia’s vaping crackdown so politically explosive.
Two From Clearing The Air
Swedish Tourist Tax: snus and pouches to be taxable in countries where they’re banned
Peter Beckett
Countries that have banned snus and nicotine pouches will be able to tax them when they’re brought into the country by consumers under a new proposal to be debated by the European Council today.
Member States would be allowed to charge excise duty on tobacco and nicotine products brought into their territory by private individuals for their own use, even where those same products are pbanned in that country.
FDA vape row erupts as US smoking falls
Tim Hong
The battle over flavoured vapes in the US has intensified after the head of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) resigned following reported clashes with Donald Trump over whether fruit-flavoured products should be approved.
Marty Makary stepped down as FDA commissioner after 13 months in the role, with Kyle Diamantas named as acting replacement. According to reports, Trump had signed off on a plan to fire Makary after criticising him for not approving fruit-flavoured vapes.
EU seeks public input on tobacco regulation revisions
Snusforumet
The European Commission has opened a public comment period to gather feedback on potential revisions to EU tobacco rules, amid heated debates and divergent member state regulations for new, non-combustible tobacco and nicotine products.

There is a type of marketing called native advertising. You’ve probably seen it on social media feeds and media outlets. Essentially, it involves ads for products and services designed to look like their native surroundings, whether that’s an organic post on Instagram or an article on an online newspaper. The thinking being that if it looks like a native post, users are more likely to see, trust, or click the ad.
WHO Nicotine Pouch Report Sparks Backlash
as Experts Highlight Safer Alternatives Are Being Ignored
Diane Caruana, Vaping Post
The latest report from the World Health Organisation on nicotine pouches has stirred more debates about tobacco harm reduction, especially among experts in the field. There’s a lot of disagreement among global regulators about how to approach these safer nicotine products. The report, named “Exposing Marketing Tactics and Strategies Driving the Growth of Nicotine Pouches,” claims that manufacturers are playing fast and loose with regulations while targeting young people with their marketing. But here’s the kicker: many researchers feel the report misses a crucial point. For millions of adult smokers, smoke-free nicotine options could be their best shot at kicking the habit of traditional cigarettes.
Why some anti-vaping campaigns miss the mark
University of Queensland
Vaping education campaigns in Australia may be missing key opportunities to support behaviour change, University of Queensland research has found.
A review of publicly available vaping media campaigns launched in Australia before May 2025 found almost half had ‘vague’ or no guidance to direct behaviour change.
E-cigarettes get a bad rap — but scientists say they can help in 2 ways: study
Rachel Sacks, New York Post
While smoking rates have fallen to an all-time low, the use of electronic cigarettes has become more popular… A study out Tuesday found that switching to pod-based salt-nicotine e-cigarettes increased the chances of quitting cigs and reduced toxic chemical exposure.
A Long Overdue Course Correction At The FDA On Vaping
Ross Marchand, Daily Caller
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been notoriously reluctant to allow consumers access to products that could save their lives. Under the Biden administration, the FDA denied over a million marketing applications for candy- or fruit-flavored vaping products, even though smokers rely on these products to kick their cigarette habits. The FDA under President Trump has not yet lived up to the administration’s deregulatory ambitions.
Vape Taxes Won’t Increase Smoking, Study Claims. Here’s the Problem.
Jason Semprini, Filter
As a lifelong Iowan, studying public health policy and cancer prevention in a state with one of the nation’s fastest-rising cancer rates, I care deeply about reducing smoking. Cigarettes are still the leading cause of preventable cancer, disease and death in the United States. Harms of this magnitude warrant critically assessing policies related to cigarettes and safer alternatives—and that includes taxation.
FDA’s New Guidance Recognizes What Law Enforcement Already Knows
Diane Goldstein, Town Hall
The federal tobacco regulatory system was built to create a legal, science-based pathway for products and enforce the law against bad actors. Today’s vaping marketplace shows how far reality has drifted from that goal.
For years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken an overly restrictive posture toward new vaping products, denying American adult consumers access to safer, regulated alternatives to cigarettes and driving them instead toward a thriving illicit market.
Trump’s FDA shakeup defends harm reduction over politics
Jeff Stier, Washington Post
The narrative around the departure of Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary is being actively (mis)shaped by White House opponents trying to paint a picture that the Trump administration’s health policies are driven by politics and cozy relationships with donors, not science.
Still, a more fact-based narrative is not being reported.
The New York Times reported that Mr. Makary resigned “over concerns about the administration’s decision to authorize fruit-flavored e-cigarettes, an action he opposed.” The Times said, “Dr. Makary told those close to him that he could not in good conscience approve flavored vapes.”

On this day…2017!
A look back at how things have moved on or otherwise…
Titration Theories
Norbert Zillatron
The existence of self-titration of nicotine when smoking is pretty well established scientifically. It’s easy enough to get reliable figures by measuring the nicotine level in the blood. But often the established level differs from that measured when the smoker could consume his customary fare. This difference is even more pronounced when testing vapers.
National Study Looks at Advertising
And Susceptibility to Use Tobacco Among Youth
Yadira Galindo
Among 12- to 17-year-olds who have never used tobacco products, nearly half were considered receptive to tobacco marketing if they were able to recall or liked at least one advertisement, report a coalition of behavioral scientists in a new national study. Receptivity to tobacco ads is associated with an increased susceptibility to smoking cigarettes in the future.
