Washington Post Embraces the Flawed CDC Youth Vaping “Crisis” Narrative

Dr. Brad Rodu, Tobacco Truth

The CDC’s latest report on youth vaping, based on the National Youth Tobacco Survey, showed that the vaping rate among U.S. high school students plummeted by half, from 28% in 2019, to 14% this year.  Still, the Washington Post editorial board on October 16 proclaimed the behavior “a public health crisis.”  Since their editorial is paywalled, I’ll give you the highlights.

Vape Shop Concerns

Public scaremongering is not helpful, says the Aotearoa Vapers Community Advocacy consumer group. The comments followed New Zealand’s Asthma and Respiratory Foundation’s latest anti-vaping media drive, highlighting that “in February 2022 there were 666 registered specialist vape retailers in New Zealand and as of today we now have 956”.

UKVIA Scottish Consultation

Scottish Government consultation divides respondents and leaves businesses and consumers unclear on the future of vaping in the country, so says the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA). More respondents to the consultation disagree than agree on a number of the proposals and UKVIA has called for the Scottish government to go back to the drawing table.

Hyde Rejections: The FDA’s Rush to Capitalize on New Youth Vaping Data

Alex Norcia, Filter

On October 6, the day the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released new data showing a modest uptick in youth vaping amid a longer-term decline, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made an announcement of its own. The agency said it had issued marketing denial orders (MDOs) for 32 disposable vaping products through its premarket tobacco product application (PMTA) process—all of them manufactured by Magellan Technology, Inc. and sold under the popular Hyde brand.

Michael Bloomberg’s spending on California’s Prop. 31 is getting ridiculous

Eric Ting,

Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has more than doubled his spending on California’s Proposition 31, a measure that would ban in-person sales of flavored tobacco products.

On Thursday of last week, campaign finance records reviewed by SFGATE showed that of the $17.3 million raised by the “yes” on Prop. 31 committee, $15.3 million had come from Bloomberg, a billionaire and former presidential candidate. Because the “no” committee had raised just $2.1 million, it meant that Bloomberg had spent 79% of the money in the race.

FDA Enlists DOJ Help to Shut Down Six Tiny Vape Companies

Jim McDonald, Vaping 360

Today the Department of Justice, on behalf of the FDA, sought injunctions against six small vaping businesses to prevent them from manufacturing or selling unauthorized vape products. The FDA says the companies sell products that were never submitted to the agency for premarket approval.

Youth Tobacco And Vaping At Record Lows In Rhode Island But Young Adult Smoking Is Rising

There is promising news out of the Ocean State. In 2021, youth use rates of tobacco and vapor products were at some of their lowest levels in Rhode Island. Unfortunately, there has been an uptick in combustible cigarette use among young adults aged 18 to 24 years old, which has also been seen in other states that have banned the sale of flavored vapor products.

Lindsey Stroud: Correcting The Record On Youth Vaping

On this episode of The Bespoke Parenting Podcast, host Julie Gunlock talks to IWF visiting fellow Lindsey Stroud about the myth of a youth vaping epidemic and how the alarmism on vaping distracts parents from the real problems facing teens and young adults today.

A Survey Of Smokers

Dick Puddlecote

One foible that anti-smoking organisations across the globe share is that they are absolutely terrified of actually engaging with the people they abuse … smokers.

They will commission pliant fellow smoker-haters to conduct cleverly-dodgy ‘research’ of course, but they don’t really want to know what smokers think. They just want a sound bite to use as a stick to beat them with. So this initiative from Forest is a good idea, I reckon.
