ASH Welcomes Idiotic Tax

The tax increases on tobacco and vape eliquids has been “welcomed” by health charity Action on Smoking and Health, marking the completion of its transition into an anti-vape organisation. The short-sighted position fails to appreciate how a tax levy approaching 400% on some products will have the unintended consequences of turning smokers away from vaping and feeding a buoyant black market.

UKVIA Concerned For Ex-Smokers

Following Rachel Reeves, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, announcing in the Budget that the Government’s plans to tax eliquid at £2.20 for every 10ml contained within a bottle, regardless of whether it contains nicotine or not, the UK Vaping Industry Association has expressed its concerns for ex-smokers. The trade body says the Government is penalising former smokers with a “revenue grab” for making sensible choices and being less of a burden on the health service.

Government Introduces Tobacco & Vapes Bill

The UK Government has introduced plans including an extended smoking ban “to protect children and most vulnerable” in the Tobacco and Vapes Bill today. The Labour administration says their “world-leading reforms” will “phase out smoking, protecting the public, NHS and economy and put us on track to a smokefree UK”.

Government Sponsored Comments on the Bill

Wes Streeting, the Health and Social Care Secretary, has released details of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill today. The Government has issued a number of statements from Streeting, Chief Medical Officer for England Professor Chris Whitty, Professor Sanjay Agrawal, Dr Charmaine Griffiths, Dr Ian Walker, Henry Gregg and Cllr David Fothergill.

Cytisinicline For E-Cigarette Cessation

Rongzhong Huang,  Tianyang Hu, JAMA Network

Comment & Response:

To the Editor We are pleased to learn the results achieved by Rigotti et al1 when using cytisinicline for e-cigarette cessation, which provides a potential pharmacologic treatment option for adults seeking to quit smoking nicotine. In fact, several previous studies have investigated cytisinicline for smoking cessation treatment with similarly promising results.

A jury trial began on Monday for a lawsuit the State of Alaska filed against JUUL Labs, Inc. and the Altria Group, Inc. for what the state is calling those company’s roles in causing an increased use of e-cigarettes by youth.
