Vape shops open on NHS hospital sites, in bid to stub out smoking

Two NHS hospitals in the Midlands have opened vape shops in a controversial bid to stub out smoking.
The shops have begun selling e-cigarettes to patients and visitors, as the trust introduces £50 fines for those caught smoking.
It comes as the Government draws up plans which aim to eliminate smoking in Britain by 2030.

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) has reviewed its position on vaping that it gives to business owners. The old website advice hadn’t been updated since 2013 but, following a discussion at the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) 2019 Forum, Mark Pawsey MP has got the organisation to rethink.
Li-ion Lies
Disreputable vendors are still selling lithium-ion cells for vaping with misleading statements about the product. Battery experts highlight that claims of high capacity or current output go beyond exaggeration and can only be described as outright lies.

U.S. e-liquid manufacturers may have to pull millions of bottles of e-juice off of vape stores shelves following a surprise mandate, issued via tweet, by a recently appointed Republican Commissioner of the Consumer Product Safety Commission earlier this year.

New national statistics recently released by the National Health Service (NHS) of Great Britain indicates that – one again – smoking rates are plummeting as more smokers turn to vaping as a smoking cessation tool. Prepared by the National Statistics Office, the annual study also provides data which dispels the myth that teen vaping is a gateway to adult use of combustible tobacco products. While the numbers show a slight rise in young people experimenting with vapor products at least once, the figures also demonstrate that teenagers are avoiding burned tobacco in droves.
Vaping influencer marketing is misunderstood

While e-cigarettes should not be marketed to minors, there seems to be a misunderstanding about how influencer marketing impacts e-commerce sales and buying trends among millennials and Gen Z’ers.
Truth Initiative, a prominent tobacco control group in the United States, released a study about Juul-related posts on Instagram earlier this month.
“Findings reveal a proliferation of JUUL-related content on Instagram, which focused on product promotion and nicotine and addiction that included youth culture and lifestyle appeals,” conclude the researchers.

Last week Edmonton Police Service (EPS) held a press conference to share their plan to address a purported rise in youth vaping. According to the EPS the cause of youth vaping is not the absence of legislation to prevent youth from vaping but the absence of adequate enforcement.
The EPS move to action is based on an understanding of the Alberta Tobacco and Smoking Reduction Act that is completely at odds with the industry and the City of Edmonton’s interpretation of the Act, as well as federal vaping regulations, threatening not only to undermine existing business operations but also the potential for vaping products to positively impact public health.

This study aimed to understand customers’ experiences of vaping and vape shops, and the extent to which smoking cessation advice is and should be provided in these shops.

Study confirms effectivity of e-cigarettes

A Spanish vapers association, Anesvap has released data which confirms what other countless studies have shown. The three main findings were that contrary to what many sources, such as the previous US Surgeon General, have claimed, vaping does not act as a gateway to smoking in young adults, that vaping is not as addictive as smoking, and also that it dramatically reduces smoking rates.

Standards, good but… Normally, I’d be in favour of regulators setting standards for things they are regulating – standard-setting is a transparent approach that means everyone knows what they have to do, the supply chain can gear up, consumers know what they are getting, and there is no nonsense about changing the rules or not even disclosing what the rules are. But… three qualifiers to this cheery endorsement of standards:
