Stopping Tobacco Organizations and Products (STOP)
The Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (‘the Foundation’) was set up in September 2017, ostensibly as a scientific organisation aiming to “accelerate an end to smoking”. It describes itself as an independent foundation, yet was set up with a pledged amount of nearly a billion dollars from global tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PMI). On 13th May 2019 the Foundation filed a tax return for its first full year of operation, 2018, providing new information on the organisation and those it funds.

Mixing use of vapes and combustible cigarettes, known as “dual use,” is seen as a win by some—especially those who are working towards quitting smoking—while others view it as an absolute health threat. The latest data from the Food and Drug Administration’s Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study confirm an already-observed outcome: Dual users are exposed to higher levels of nicotine and the carcinogen NKK than people who exclusively use combustibles.

Leading experts on nicotine, tobacco-related disease, public health, policymaking, science and technology were joined by users of so-called “safer nicotine products” such as electronic cigarettes or vapes, oral tobaccos such as Swedish snus, and ‘heat-not-burn’ tobacco products, in calling on governments and regulators to stop ignoring the growing body of scientific evidence pointing to such products as a safe alternative to combustible tobacco.
While it has become a foregone conclusion that smoking cigarettes is bad for the health, there are some governments and regulating bodies which either ban the use of safer nicotine products outright or tax them just like they would for combustible tobacco, instead of encouraging their use.

Vape Advertising Doesn’t Renormalise Smoking
Researchers looked at the impact of online e-cigarette advertisements. Paula Booth from The University of East London worked with Ian Albery, Sharon Cox and Daniel Frings from London South Bank University. The paper has been published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Stupid San Fran Ecig Ban
San Francisco faces a total ban on the sale of all vaping products following a unanimous vote. Stupid, idiotic, criminal – pick your own adjective – none seem to fully encapsulate how awful the actions of the board of city supervisors are. Wrapped up in the nonsense that they are acting to protect the state’s youth, the hypocrisy is all too evident because tobacco will remain on sale.
Juul has been fantastically successful among adults. Why do you think it has grown so quickly? Let me help you here: it is because in a free market consumers buy what works. The rate of decline in US cigarette volumes has more than doubled since Juul entered the market.

NHS in North East will promote vaping to smokers

An NHS anti-smoking group has provided recommendations for NHS Trusts to adopt a harm reduction approach to e-cigarettes. Dr Tony Branson, clinical lead for the Northern Cancer Alliance, said: “With e-cigarettes there is no smoke, no tar and no carbon monoxide. E-cigarettes are now proving more popular and it important that we get across to patients the short-term and longer-term health benefits from quitting smoking tobacco.”

The Los Angeles Times’s June 24 editorial, “San Francisco’s E-cigarette Ban Isn’t Just Bad Policy, it’s Bad for Public Health” is right on target.
Today, San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on banning the sales of electronic tobacco products, or e-cigarettes, within the city until the Food and Drug Administration adopts regulations for the products. Meanwhile, anyone over 21 with an ID will be able to continue to purchase combustible cigarettes, liquor, and marijuana in markets throughout the city.

Back in 1967 the mantra on the streets in The City by the Bay was anything goes. It led to the creation of a progressive political movement that eventually captured city politics. San Francisco for decades led the way in getting government out of people’s lives. It is the city that defied state law and gave the nation same sex marriage. If you are a true libertarian or either a conservative or liberal that cherishes personal freedom and choice, San Francisco was edgy but true to the concept of adults being able to chart their own course as long as they didn’t run roughshod over someone else’s rights.

The smoking ban has always sat on a throne of lies. It was promoted on the basis of junk science and has been retrospectively justified on the basis of blatant quackery.
The tenth anniversary of England’s smoking ban is coming up on Saturday and so we must brace ourselves for more lies as we ‘celebrate’ its anniversary.

A number of those blogs have got me thinking about the consequences of the ‘Prohibition Era’ that we seem to be descending ever deeper into due to the tax-sponging so-called Public Health Charities and bodies.
