The war on vaping is a war on public health

Fact: Vaping is less dangerous than smoking. This is one of those facts that doesn’t really need research attached to it. Cigarette smoke contains “carbon monoxide, ammonia, dimethylnitrosamine, formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and acrolein,” a British anti-smoking charity explains. Vapour from an e-cigarette contains water and either glycerin or propylene glycol. While it’s true the long-term effects of consuming the latter two in e-cig form have not extensively been studied, crucially, they are not smoke.

Dr. Joanna Cohen recently authored a misleading and factually incorrect commentary on tobacco harm reduction in The Hill.  Here is my rebuttal, in bold.

Cohen: “So why should we trust cigarette companies to help reduce tobacco use?”

No one trusts cigarette companies.  That’s why Congress gave the Food and Drug Administration regulatory authority over tobacco in 2009.  Cohen misrepresents the principle public health goal, which isn’t to reduce tobacco use, but to prevent the 480,000 premature American deaths that result each year from smoking. That number hasn’t appreciably changed for the 15 years the FDA has had regulatory authority.

Earlier this month, the Colorado House committee on Business Affairs and Labor demonstrated their commitment to the lives and health of millions of Coloradans, including the state’s youth, as well as the survival of responsible small businesses in voting down Senate Bill 022, which would have allowed county governments to ban the sale of flavored vaping products.

Poland and France Receive Criticism

International health experts and an advocacy organisation have criticised plans to tax nicotine pouches in Poland and ban disposables in France despite the health benefits they offer over smoking.  Sweden, which is on the brink of being officially smoke free and has significantly lower smoking rates than Poland, has adopted a system of taxation proportionate to the risk of alternative products.

Preet Kaur Gill, the Labour Shadow Minister for Primary Care and Public Health, has asked a series of questions about vaping to the Department for Health and The Exchequer. Preet Kaur Gill asked the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care what steps are being taken to tackle the sale of illegal vapes on the black market.

Cross-party group on vaping launched to ensure new UK laws are “fair and balanced”

A cross-party group on vaping has been launched in the UK in a bid to combat harmful misinformation and ensure any new legislation is “fair and balanced.”

The APPG (All-Party Parliamentary Group) for Responsible Vaping will provide a crucial voice on vaping within Parliament, with a focus on proportionate regulation and responsibility within the sector.

Gareth Johnson MP, Chair of the APPG, said: “I have been interested in the benefits of vaping for some time. There are now millions of former UK smokers who quit thanks to vaping. However, the sheer volume of legislation proposed on the sector over the next 18 months is considerable and it’s critical we get the balance right.”

Kentucky and Nebraska Legislatures Pass Vape Restrictions

Vaping bills in Kentucky and Nebraska have been passed by lawmakers and are headed to state governors for signature or veto. In Georgia, a PMTA registry bill failed to pass before the legislature ended its session for the year.

In Kentucky, both houses of the General Assembly passed a typical PMTA registry bill, designed by the tobacco industry and promoted by its lobbyists. The Nebraska bill, despite being described by many as a registry bill, does not appear to include any PMTA-related requirements for products to be sold. It does, however, ban online sales.

Under the heading “Winning with ESG,” Turning Point Brands states, “We recognize that incorporating ESG into our business strategy will support our operating principles of winning with accountability, integrity and responsibility.”

During the 10th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP10) to the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), authorities raided four hotels hosting tobacco harm reduction (THR) advocates, investigating reports of “T-shirts and pamphlets advertising harmful products,” according to Martin Cullip, International Fellow at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance’s (TPA) Consumer Center.

FDA Launches Searchable Database for Tobacco Products

The FDA just unveiled its Searchable Tobacco Products Database, which it says is a new list of over 17,000 tobacco products—including e-cigarettes—that may be legally marketed in the United States.

FDA said the database provides information on three categories of products:

1) New tobacco products that received marketing authorization through one of FDA’s three pathways to market a new tobacco product.
2) Pre-existing tobacco products established through a voluntary determination program.
3) Provisional tobacco products that were removed from review.
