VApril Puts Education First
VApril, “the largest and most successful vape awareness campaign in the world”, is returning for its eighth year amid record-high misperceptions about the stop smoking tool. This year, the UK Vaping Industry Association is placing public education at the top of the agenda.
100s Apply for Misinformation Post
Hundreds of potential candidates have applied for the vape industry’s first ever Chief Misinformation Officer job, according to the employer who created the role. The job vacancy was opened through quit smoking missionaries, Riot Labs, in a bid to tackle the “flood” of misinformation on vaping in recent months.
Vape Club Comments on the Vape Bill
The Tobacco and Vapes Bill had its third and final reading in the Commons last week, with MPs voting 366 to 41, approving the bill for transition to the House of Lords. Dan Marchant, CEO and founder of the UK’s largest vaping retailer, Vape Club, has commented on how the final reading and the Bill’s transfer to the House of Lords is going to impact the vaping industry and the UK’s journey to becoming smokefree by 2030.
ASH Welcomes the Bill Vote
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has welcomed the UK Parliament voting 360 to 42 in favour of sending the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to its next stage in the House of Lords. The charity said the MPs voted to pass the “historic” Tobacco and Vapes Bill “which will phase out the sale of tobacco to the next generation”.
Science Reflective of Real-World Experience is Essential to Effective Tobacco and Vapor Policy
Joe Murillo, Policy & Progress in Tobacco Harm Reduction
Science and evidence should be the foundation of all public health policy. That might feel like an obvious statement, but the unfortunate reality is, it’s not always the case, particularly in debates over tobacco control and policies impacting potentially less harmful alternatives. We face a persistent challenge: separating scientific reality from deeply entrenched assumptions. Throughout my career in tobacco and tobacco alternative policy, I’ve observed decisions shaped not by evidence, but by preconceived (and often misguided) notions about nicotine, its consumption, the people who use it and the best ways to reduce the death and disease associated with smoking combustible cigarettes.
Michael Pesko, Christian Saenz, Cato Institute
Market forces drive innovation in pharmaceuticals, and pharmaceuticals significantly enhance longevity and quality of life. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) plays a crucial role in regulating pharmaceuticals in the United States and influencing drug diffusion globally. The FDA’s primary role is to approve new drugs whose safety and efficacy benefits exceed any risks. FDA regulation involves a lengthy, costly, and uncertain drug approval process, high regulatory barriers to making even small changes to drugs after their initial approval, and expensive post-market surveillance.
Mindset Shift Needed On Tobacco Harm Reduction
Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA), Scoop
The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) today urged global tobacco control policymakers to abandon outdated prohibitionist approaches and embrace harm reduction strategies grounded in science.
Ahead of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control’s (FCTC) COP11 meeting later this year, CAPHRA emphasised that meaningful progress requires inclusion, transparency, and a commitment to evidence-based policymaking.
Saskatchewan’s 6% PST on Vaping Undermines Harm Reduction, Fuels Illicit Market
The Canadian Vaping Association – GlobeNewswire
Last week, the Saskatchewan government announced it will remove the 6% provincial sales tax (PST) exemption on vaping products, effective June 1, 2025. As the national voice for the vaping industry, the Canadian Vaping Association (CVA) is deeply concerned by this decision, which was made without meaningful consultation with businesses and stakeholders dedicated to harm reduction.
Let’s talk e-cigarettes, March 2025
The University of Oxford
Associate Professor Jamie Hartmann-Boyce and Associate Professor Nicola Lindson discuss the new evidence in e-cigarette research and interview Dr Monserrat Conde from the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, University of Oxford. In the March podcast Monserrat Conde discusses the findings of the recent systematic review of electronic cigarettes and subsequent smoking in young people and an evidence and gap map. The systematic review aims to assess the evidence for a relationship between the use of e-cigarettes /vapes and subsequent smoking in young people under 30, and whether this differs by demographic characteristics.
UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA)
VApril, the largest and most successful vape awareness campaign in the world, is returning for its eighth year amid record-high misperceptions about the stop smoking tool.
Created by the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), the initiative comes at a critical time for the UK vaping sector, with half of smokers wrongly believing vaping is as harmful – or worse -than smoking.
Vapes Increasingly Pushed Underground in the US and UK
Roger Bate, Filter
Nicotine vaping products are increasingly being pushed underground in two contrasting jurisdictions, as my recent research illustrates. This sends a damaging message about important harm reduction tools, and threatens consumer safety.
The United Kingdom has, up to this point, regulated vaping products to ensure they are safe, taxing them at a fairly low rate to help nudge people from smoking to vaping.
Two from Tim Hong, Clearing The Air
Luxembourg criticised for proposing de facto ban on nicotine pouches
Luxembourg has been widely criticised for its proposed ‘de facto’ ban on nicotine pouches.
The European Commission, Greece and Sweden have all raised several objections to the draft Bill, which limits the strength of nicotine pouches to a very low 0.048g and imposes communication and labelling restrictions.
The Bill also aims to ban sales of tobacco heated products (THP) with “characterising flavours” and introduce compulsory health warnings.
France’s vape and nicotine pouch bans could trap millions in smoking, report warns
A new report from global health advocacy group Smoke Free Sweden compares the prohibitive tobacco control policies of France with the Swedes’ more regulatory approach. It highlights how Sweden’s embrace of nicotine alternatives, such as vapes and snus, has resulted in the lowest smoking rates in Europe.

Measure to remove cigarette tax from heated tobacco moves in House
Janelle Irwin Taylor, Florida Politics
A measure that would differentiate heated tobacco products (HTPs) from traditional cigarettes is on the move in the House, clearing the House Industries and Professional Activities Committee by a 12-2 vote.
FDA tobacco official is removed from post in latest blow to health agency’s leadership
Matthew Perrone, AP
The Food and Drug Administration’s chief tobacco regulator was removed from his post Tuesday, part of sweeping cuts to the federal health workforce that have cleared out many of the nation’s top experts overseeing food, drugs, vaccines and products containing nicotine.
Brian King Out at FDA Tobacco Center
Jim McDonald, Vaping 360
Brian King has been removed as director of the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP), the FDA office responsible for regulation of tobacco and nicotine products, including vapes. King was unpopular among vaping and harm reduction advocates, who saw him as a roadblock to replacing smoking with low-risk non-combustible nicotine products.
Big Tobacco targets Trump in hope – and fear – of change
Emma Rumney, Reuters
Big tobacco companies like British American Tobacco are lobbying U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to crack down on illegal vapes, including via import bans on Chinese devices, documents show and industry consultants said. Tobacco groups, including BAT (BATS.L), opens new tab and Altria (MO.N), opens new tab, have complained that while waiting years for their own vapes or other products to get permission for sale in the U.S., some vape makers have taken substantial market share even though authorities say they are illegal to sell.
JAY GOLDBERG: Carney should embrace harm reduction for smokers
Jay Goldberg, Toronto Sun
Liberal Leader Mark Carney is out to prove he’s a centrist. By ending unpopular Trudeau-era policies like the capital gains tax hike and the consumer carbon tax, Carney is clearly making a play for the political middle. If Carney really wants Canadian consumers to believe he’s moved to the middle, it’s time for the Liberals to embrace evidenced-based policies. That includes pivoting away from the last government’s approach to nicotine pouches.

Global Forum on Nicotine
The gateway effect is often cited by opponents of safer nicotine products as a cautionary tale about the risks of nicotine use: that young people who use nicotine are more likely to initiate smoking. However a recent study has found key evidence that indicates this is not the case. Joining us today is Will Godfrey, editor-in-chief at Filter magazine, joins us to discuss this study and its implications for nicotine research.
A look back at how things have moved on or otherwise…
Bloomberg anti-vaping propaganda
Clive Bates, The Counterfactual
Bloomberg scrutinised. Unusually, a journalist decided to take a sceptical look at Bloomberg Philanthropies and its many proxies and the impact of their war against vaping. The result is an excellent must-read piece by Mark Gunther (@MarcGunther) in the Chronicle of Philanthropy: Bloomberg’s Millions Funded an Effective Campaign Against Vaping. Could It Do More Harm Than Good? (web archive) (23 March 2021).
Vaping, Covid the Precautionary Principle
James Dunworth, Ashtray Blog
Opposition to vaping is driven by a complex web of factors. These include money, anti-nicotine morality and a justified distrust of anything related to tobacco companies.
To get further into the web, it’s important to understand the precautionary principle.
