Tobacco and Vapes Bill: Clause 13

The next part of this effective foray into the warped mind of Dr Caroline Johnson, Planet of the Vapes looks at the debate on amendments to Clause 13 of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, where MPs considered ‘Displays of products or prices in England’. The debate took place in a public committee. It began well, very well, but then it went all Dr Caroline Johnson.

WHO: Include Consumer Voices!

The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) has announced that it has written to Health Ministries across the Asia Pacific region, pressing for the inclusion of consumer voices as countries finalise their positions for the upcoming 11th Conference of the Parties (COP11) of the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

There appears to be something of a disconnect in US public health policy. In many ways that is not surprising, given the government is in the middle of a handover that will result in a massive shift in philosophical outlook on myriad issues.

Skepticism Over FDA Bid to Mandate Very Low-Nicotine Cigarettes

Kiran Sidhu, Filter

The Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has issued a proposed rule that would cap nicotine levels in combustible tobacco products at a very low level. By making cigarettes “minimally or nonaddictive” in this way, the agency declared, “the United States would be the first country globally to take such a bold, life-saving action to prevent and reduce smoking-related disease and death.”

Trump Orders Have Potential to Boost Nicotine Market

Nicotine Insider

After promising to save vaping, the Trump administration has implemented at least three policies so far that could benefit the U.S. nicotine industry. However, the regulatory freeze order may have the most significant impact. Nicotine industry stakeholders celebrated the move and its departure from the previous administration’s policies.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has withdrawn its two proposals that would ban the sale of menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars.

Yesterday, Jan. 21, the agency formally withdrew proposal No. 0910-AI60, the action that would have banned the sales of menthol cigarettes.

It means the agency is no longer advancing the proposals, both of which were in their final stages, though the FDA could reverse course at any time.

A look back at how things have moved on or otherwise…
Jeffrey A. Singer, Cato Institute

What is driving politicians’ irrational fear of nicotine? Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a crackdown on a nicotine pouch sold under the brand name Zyn. He claims the nicotine pouches are a danger to teens who use them as an alternative to e‑cigarettes.
