What is driving politicians’ irrational fear of nicotine? Earlier this week, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for a crackdown on a nicotine pouch sold under the brand name Zyn. He claims the nicotine pouches are a danger to teens who use them as an alternative to e‑cigarettes.

E‑cigarettes are a proven and probably the most effective harm reduction strategy for people who want to quit tobacco smoke—more effective than nicotine patches, nicotine gum, or other smoking cessation tools.

Council Demands Disposable Ban

Sheffield City Councillors have written to the Secretary of State at the Department of Health to demand that the government bans disposable single-use vapes. The decision was made at December’s full council meeting. They say this step has been taken in response “to the increase in youth vaping and the impact these devices are having on the environment and the wellbeing of our children.”

Oz Bans Disposable Imports

The Hon Mark Butler MP confirmed that Australia’s complete ban on the importation of disposables has been enacted at the start of 2024 leaving Australians facing a AUD$150 bill to get a single prescription vape. Smugly, Butler said, “There has never been a better time to quit vaping” as Australia works to be the best failing nation at tobacco harm reduction.

Partnership To Promote Recycling

The Wastecare Group has partnered with Supreme PLC, ElfBar and B&M stores to promote the recycling of spent disposable single-use vapes. The scheme involves Wastecare increasing the number of vape collection points throughout the B&M chain. The scheme is going to be promoted by Supreme, ElfBar and B&M to their customers.

Global Forum on Nicotine

In a landmark ruling the FDA’s refusal to authorize new non-tobacco flavoured vaping products has been sharply criticized. We ask Will Godfrey of Filter Magazine if this could be a turning point for flavoured products in the United States, and how the FDA will now seek to reassert its authority in the aftermath.

Disposable vapes ban ‘could lead to relapse in people trying to quit smoking’

 Tobi Thomas, The Guardian

A ban on disposable vapes could discourage the use of e-cigarettes among people who are trying to quit smoking, research has found.

The government is considering a ban over concerns that children are using the products and becoming addicted. However, a study by academics at University College London and funded by Cancer Research UK has found it would also affect 2.6 million adults across Great Britain, 1.2 million of whom smoke and a further 744,000 who have previously.
