Debunking the myth that vaping causes popcorn lung

Michelle Minton, Reason

Popcorn lung, formally known as bronchiolitis obliterans, is a disease that causes an irreversible narrowing of lung airways. This rare condition initially gained media attention in the early 2000s due to a cluster of cases among microwave popcorn plant workers. In recent years, news media have frequently purported a link between the disease and vaping nicotine. But is there really a connection between popcorn lung and vaping?

World Vapers Alliance

Yes, yes, “we don’t know”, but it is necessary to put a context on this negative assessment. In particular, we need to challenge rhetorical arguments using this lack of knowledge as an argument to oppose THR.

We don’t know in absolute terms, we might never know it with full precision, as the complexity of human biology makes it a daunting problem given the diversity of individual responses and potentially affected biological systems.

Statement: Disposable vaping ban could affect some of the most vulnerable

Dr Stuart Griffiths, Yorkshire Cancer Research

Yorkshire Cancer Research welcomes measures that will help prevent young people who do not smoke from accessing vaping products. It is clear that a ban of disposable vaping products is likely to have some impact. However, we are concerned that a complete ban on single-use vapes could make it harder for adults from specific, vulnerable groups to quit smoking.

Vaping is an effective stop smoking tool that successfully helps thousands of adults who smoke reduce their risk of cancer every year. Unfortunately, disposable vaping products have proven particularly appealing to young people.

CAPHRA Calls for Disbanding of Vaping Regulatory

Kiwi vape company Vapo took the New Zealand government to court and won over confused maximum eliquid nicotine strength messaging and ‘threats’. The Coalition of Asia Pacific Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (CAPHRA) is now calling for the disbanding of the Ministry of Health’s Vaping Regulatory Authority (VRA) in light of the recent court case.

EFP Leaves Bad Taste in the Mouth

The European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) has made a claim that vaping is as harmful to gum and oral health as traditional tobacco cigarette smoking. It claims, “despite the fact that the vaping phenomenon is relatively new compared to smoking, meaning research details are still incomplete, evidence does show a clear link between e-cigarettes and poor gum and oral health.” The statement has been criticised by Dr Richard Holliday, an expert in restorative dentistry and periodontics.

Parliament

Politics has resumed at the Palace of Westminster despite many government ministers wishing it hadn’t. As we enter the extended home straight leading up to the next general election, some have turned their minds back to protecting the health of the nation and begun discussing vaping and tobacco harm reduction once more.
