Newly voted MEPs may change Europe’s hardline approach on vapes

Changes to the make-up of the European Parliament may favour a more lenient approach to vaping as a key tool to help smokers quit, an MEP has said.
Current Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Radka Maxová says that newly elected MEPs – following the elections in June – may lead to less restrictive positions on how nicotine alternatives such as vapes are regulated.
However, she says the parliament’s current conservative stance is likely to be reflected in its upcoming proposal of a revised EU tobacco policy framework.

No matter how bad things get in neo-puritan Britain, they can always get worse. The Labour MP Rachael Maskell has put forward an amendment to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to extend Sunak’s prohibition to all nicotine products, including vapes and pouches. The only difference is that the ban on tobacco sales will be for those born after 2008 whereas the ban on nicotine will be for those born after 2014.

In Florida and across the country, a growing number of former adult smokers are making the conscious decision to switch to less harmful, reduced-risk products, such as vapes. These harm-reduction products offer smokers who are struggling to quit an alternative to combustible tobacco that can help them kick their smoking habit and potentially improve public health.

A new report has been released in Stockholm by international health experts Smoke Free Sweden. They say that “No Smoke, Less Harm” presents “compelling evidence that despite similar levels of nicotine consumption, Sweden boasts significantly lower rates of tobacco-related diseases compared with other European nations”.

A new “research letter” in the pay-to-publish JAMA publication finds youth are not using JUUL due to flavors.
In a text survey of 1,129 respondents between the ages of 14 and 24 years, only 4.7 percent of respondents cited “flavors” as a reason for people their age to use JUUL. Conversely, 62.2 percent of respondents cited social reasons.
