Public Health Experts Urge U.S. Health Officials to Correct E-Cigarette Misinformation

Michael Pesko, Georgia State University

Leading e-cigarette researchers are urging the U.S. Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) to correct misinformation overstating the dangers of e-cigarettes as part of its “Moving Forward” initiative.

A group of public health experts from five major U.S. universities along with the attorney general for Iowa have published an editorial in the journal ADDICTION drawing attention to how the CDC and U.S. Surgeon General perpetuate misinformation on e-cigarettes. They ask the CDC to take concrete steps to address and correct the errors, and thereby strengthen its reputation.

Expert reaction to study of people who vape and smoke (dual users) and quitting smoking

Science Media Centre

A study published in Tobacco Control looks at dual use of e-cigarettes and cigarettes and quitting.

Dr Sarah Jackson, Principal Research Fellow, UCL Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group, University College London (UCL), said:

“This study does not assess whether vaping helps smokers to quit. Rather, it describes patterns of smoking and vaping over time among a group of adults who both smoked cigarettes and vaped (‘dual users’) when the study started…

Prof John Britton, Emeritus Professor of Epidemiology, University of Nottingham, said:

“In my view the findings here are predictable in a model in which smokers who try vaping do it for two principal reasons – to reduce or quit smoking (whether for health, social or cost reasons) and to manage short periods of smoking abstinence during the day….

Diseases That Studies Linked to E-Cigarettes Generally

Were Diagnosed Before Subjects Began Vaping

Jacob Sullum, Reason

In recent years, a bunch of studies have reported correlations between nicotine vaping and various smoking-related diseases, seemingly undermining the case for e-cigarettes as a harm-reducing alternative to combusted tobacco. But as a new analysis in the journal Internal and Emergency Medicine notes, those studies paid no attention to the question of whether the diseases were diagnosed before or after the subjects began vaping—a glaring omission when you are trying to figure out whether the associations indicate cause-and-effect relationships.

Exclusive: British American Tobacco threatens legal action over Government vaping review

Aaron Dahmen, nzherald.co.nz

British American Tobacco is threatening legal action against the Government over a review of New Zealand’s vaping products, which could result in more than 2000 substances being taken off shelves. That’s according to a letter, seen by Newstalk ZB, addressed to newly appointed director-general of health Dr Diana Sarfarti.

Consumer Group Calls For Proportionate Regulation

The New Nicotine Alliance consumer charity actively campaigns on behalf of all consumers of alternative nicotine products, including vaping. It has joined calls for the proportionate regulation of nicotine pouches with the aim of closing a loophole that allows under-18s to legally purchase the products.

ONS: Smoking in 2021

The Office for National Statistics has released its data from the last census, and it shows that vaping has powered “a statistically significant drop” in UK smoking rates. The headline figure is that last year’s record low of 14% has fallen further to 13.3% in 2021. Action on Smoking and Health say that this shows progress, but it believes the Government cannot be complacent.

Less people smoking cigarettes in Wrexham indicates recent ONS data

Amelia Shallish, The Leader

The figures indicated the estimated prevalence of cigarette smoking in the UK in 2021 by local authority area.

In the data it was found that the estimated prevalence of cigarette smoking in Wrexham has decreased from 17.6% in 2020 to 13.8% in 2021.

In Flintshire, there was a slight rise in the proportion of cigarette smokers from 13.9% in 2020 to 14.3% in 2021.

Chaos, Incompetence and Failure — the FDA’s Record on Tobacco

Clive Bates, DC Journal

By the end of this year, the Center for Tobacco Products at the Food and Drug Administration will have received $7.6 billion in user fees since its formation in 2009. Yet, it remains challenging to identify even one clear public health benefit the FDA can claim for this money. And there is a strong case that it is doing more harm than good.

Vape retailer Avail loses challenge to denial of FDA approval

Brendan Pierson, Reuters

A seller of flavored liquid used in e-cigarettes has lost its appeal of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s refusal to approve its products, the latest in a series of court orders upholding the agency’s tightening regulation of the e-cigarette industry.

A unanimous panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday found that the FDA had acted within its authority as it tackled the “daunting task of ensuring that another generation of Americans does not become addicted to nicotine and tobacco products,” rebuffing an appeal from Virginia-based Avail Vapor LLC.

Researchers Say CDC Must Correct Vaping Misinformation

A group of tobacco researchers has asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Surgeon General to correct misinformation about nicotine vaping shared by those public health agencies.

The authors laud Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s recent COVID-inspired initiative to reduce health misinformation, but remind the SG and the CDC that the agencies are also actively promoting misinformation regarding e-cigarettes.

Supreme Court Refuses to Halt California Flavor Ban

R.J. Reynolds and the other plaintiffs challenging the state of California’s flavored vape and tobacco ban have asked the Supreme Court to grant an injunction preventing the ban from being enforced while the lawsuit is decided. The ban was passed by California voters on Nov. 8, and is set to take effect sometime in December.

Columbus Passes Flavored Vape and Tobacco Ban

The Columbus, Ohio City Council voted Monday to prohibit sales of flavored vaping products and tobacco, making it one of just a few major cities between the east and west coasts to do so. The flavor ban passed unanimously (7-0), despite strong opposition from vaping businesses and other local retailers.

Feedback on the Multnomah County ban on flavored tobacco and nicotine products

Jacob Grier, jacobgrier.com

On December 15, the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners will vote on an ordinance that will ban the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine products in the county (which includes Portland, Oregon). I testified in person against the ban, which you can view here. But since testimony was limited to just two minutes, I’ve also submitted the following written response below. If you would also like to submit a response, use this link. My comments:
