Three from Dave Cross, Planet of the Vapes
Nic-Free Demand Increases
New data from Vape Superstore reveals a 46% surge in sales of nicotine-free e-liquids over the past six months, alongside a 75% increase in Google searches for nicotine-free vapes in the last three months. The company tells us this trend highlights a growing shift towards nicotine-free vaping as more consumers seek to reduce or eliminate nicotine from their lifestyle.
Crackdown in Pembrokeshire
A multi-agency operation has resulted in the seizure of illegal tobacco, vapes and cash from two shops in Pembrokeshire, as part of a major crackdown on the illegal tobacco trade. Specialist Regional Trading Standards Officers (from Operation CeCe), Pembrokeshire County Council’s Trading Standards Team and Dyfed-Powys Police, took part in the operation.
Parliament Matters
In this latest trip to the Houses of Parliament, the Conservative’s Shadow Parliamentary Under Secretary, Andrew Rosindell, was concerned about the potential impact of the government’s Tobacco and Vapes Bill on smoking cessation. In The Other Place, the DUP’s Lord Weir of Ballyholme wanted to know about incidents of cardiovascular disease.
E-cigarettes linked to lower cardiac risks compared to tobacco cigarettes in people with HIV
OutrageMag.com
Electronic cigarettes use may pose lower cardiovascular risks in people living with HIV compared to tobacco cigarette use.
This is according to a UCLA-led research — “Atherogenic Effects of Acute Electronic Cigarette Compared With Tobacco Cigarette Smoking in People Living With HIV: A Randomized Crossover Trial” by Theodoros Kelesidis, Leila Fotooh Abadi, Isabelle Ruedisueli, Zoee U. D’Costa, and Holly R. Middlekauff — that was published in JAHA.
Skip Murray and the Radical Kindness
Claudio Teixeira, From the Editor’s Desk, Substack
Brainerd, Minnesota. A small town stitched together between pine trees and lakes, nestled in the frozen heart of the American North.
There, in a quiet corner of the Midwest, lives a woman with a serene voice and seismic presence. Her name is Skip Murray —and her mission, though it may seem simple at first glance, challenges entire structures: to save lives. Her instrument? A gesture that today borders on insurrection in times of ideological trenches and a cultural fetish for apathy, surface impressions, and the speed of judgment: tenderness.
In Sweden, a focus on smokeless tobacco
Sandhya Raman, Roll Call
Last year, only 11 percent of U.S. adults reported smoking cigarettes in the past week, half the number of a decade prior.
But in Sweden, the shift away from smoking — albeit to use other tobacco products — is nearly complete.
In 2015, the Swedish government set a goal of becoming “smoke-free” by 2025.
3 Key Regulatory Updates for Nicotine Pouches in April 2025
Mariam Gogolishvili, Considerate Pouchers
As the popularity of nicotine pouches continues to grow across Europe, regulators are responding with a wave of new proposals, restrictions, and bans. April 2025 has seen several major developments that could reshape how nicotine pouches are sold, used, and perceived. For consumers staying informed is now more important than ever.
Here are three key regulatory updates from this month that deserve your attention.
Matt Chittock, Convenience Store
1. The disposable vape ban could be a reset for the category
2. Single use vapes made up 65% of vape sales at the start of 2025
3. Tobacco in independents and symbols was worth £6.1 billion last year, with ready made cigarettes accounting for 4.3 billion
4. Ultra Value has the fastest growing share of tobacco, making up 16.8% of the combined tobacco market
5. Nicotine pouches are now up 82% in volume
6. More legislation may be on the way…
BusinessMirror
SMOKE-FREE technologies give the user the satisfaction that a smoker feels, but the percentage of harmful and carcinogenic substances that reach their body is dramatically reduced, according to an international expert.
David Khayat, a leading French oncologist, said scientific studies show that the number and concentration of substances produced from smoking are related to high temperatures that occur during combustion.

Here are some well-known celebrities who vape, with many attributing it to helping them quit smoking.
Taxing safer nicotine products like cigarettes could have “devastating consequences,” health agency warns
Ali Anderson
Taxing safer nicotine products at rates comparable to cigarettes could have devastating consequences for public health, a leading health agency has warned.
The Global State of Tobacco Harm Reduction (GSTHR) is urging governments to use taxes to ensure cigarettes are significantly more expensive than safer alternatives like vapes and heated tobacco products.
HTPs put far less stress on vision than smoking, world-first CoEHAR study finds
Ali Anderson
- Heated tobacco products (HTPs) cause significantly lower levels of oxidative stress and inflammation in eye tissues compared to cigarettes
- Cigarette smoke is proven to be harmful for eye health, increasing the risk of inflammation and oxidative damage
- Smoking is a confirmed risk factor for corneal epithelial diseases
Smear Tactics Against THR Advocates Reflected in NZ Media Ruling
Kiran Sidhu, Filter
Tobacco harm reduction (THR) advocates don’t just face misinformation in the form of false and misleading claims about safer nicotine products. Too often, they’re also subjected to smears.
Individuals and groups who receive no funding from the tobacco or vape industries may nonetheless be characterized as nefarious agents of those interests—a cheap way for opponents of THR to dismiss arguments without troubling to grapple with their merits. For media, such claims are often about eyeballs.
5 Takeaways from the Survey – When Policies Ignore the People Who Matter Most
Liza Katsiashvili, World Vapers’ Alliance
We often talk about how vaping policies around the world aren’t focused on consumers. Policymakers may have good intentions—like reducing smoking rates or protecting young people from nicotine—but the policies we end up with often contradict those goals. Is that an oxymoron? Not really. That’s just how prohibitionism works. Or rather—how it doesn’t work.
In the world of tobacco harm reduction, you’ll often meet adults who’ve quit smoking thanks to less harmful alternatives like vapes, pouches, or snus. But in government circles, you’re more likely to hear discussions about banning vape flavours, raising taxes on safer products, or banning vaping altogether. The success stories are often ignored.
Leadership Change at FDA’s Tobacco Center Signals Turbulent Times for US Vapor Policy
Lindsey Stroud, The Well
In a significant development for tobacco and vapor policy, Brian King, director of the Center for Tobacco Products at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, was placed on leave as of April 1. His departure is part of a sweeping overhaul of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that also includes the exit of approximately 3,500 FDA personnel.
Bidi Opens Latest Appeal Against FDA
Tobacco Reporter
Yesterday (April 2), Bidi Vapor LLC urged the Eleventh Circuit to reverse a U.S. Food and Drug Administration decision denying its application to market a disposable e-cigarette, saying the agency acted unlawfully. In oral arguments in Miami, attorney Eric Gotting told an appellate panel that the FDA’s decision was “arbitrary and capricious and unlawful,” and that the agency admitted adult smokers would likely switch to Bidi’s safer product—a disposable e-cigarette prefilled with tobacco-flavored e-liquid—but still denied the application.
Pharmacy-Only Vaping Model Failing as Three-Quarters of Pharmacies Refuse to Stock Products
aliveadvocacymovement.com, Nicotine Science and Policy
The Australian pharmacy-only vaping model is failing, with 75% of pharmacies not stocking vaping products. The government’s restrictive approach has led to limited product availability, half of which are supplied by Big Tobacco. Critics argue that pharmacies are uninterested due to paperwork and reputation concerns. Advocates call for reform to allow licensed vape retailers to meet demand. As legal access declines, a dangerous black market is emerging. Vapers report confusion and disinterest from pharmacies, highlighting the model’s flaws. The ALIVE Advocacy Movement urges immediate change to prevent further harm and reliance on illegal sources.
Demonstrable | FDA’s Anti-Vaping Regime Dismantled
Brent Stafford, Regulator Watch
The FDA’s anti-vaping regime—once thought untouchable—is being dismantled. Mass layoffs, shuttered offices, and the removal of Brian King as Director of the Center for Tobacco Products all signal a massive restructuring the U.S. vaping industry has long called for.
Joining RegWatch to unpack the scope and significance of these unprecedented moves is Tony Abboud, Executive Director of the Vapor Technology Association. We dig into the broken PMTA process, the Supreme Court’s decision in FDA v. Wages and White Lion, and the role of misinformation in shaping nicotine policy.
