Tom Price nominated US Health Secretary
Diane Caruana, VapingPost
Republican Tom Price, a Congressman from Georgia, has been selected by Trump to fulfill the role of U.S. health secretary as part of the incoming administration. This means that the future of e-cigarette regulations is in his hands.
Congressman Price, who worked as an orthopedic surgeon for almost 20 years before joining Congress, has represented the northern Atlanta suburbs in the House of Representatives since 2005. He is renowned for being conservative.
Does the Public Housing smoking ban apply to vaping?
Diane Caruana, VapingPost
Last Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development secretary Julián Castro, decreed that all 3,100 local Public Housing Agencies must put in place “smoke-free” policies at the low income residence buildings within their jurisdition…But what about vaping?
The idea is for smoking to be banned inside all 940,000 public housing units nationwide by late 2018. The Department of Housing and Urban Development, (HUD), has been pushing local public agencies to implement smoking bans, and in fact about 228,000 housing units were already smoke-free.
News designed for panic
Paul Barnes, Facts Do matter
In an all-too-familiar refrain, the Daily Fail has once again thrown journalistic integrity out of the window (as if they had any to begin with) to boldly tell the world that “e-cigs are bad mmkay”. Regular readers will of course remember a similar “study” – these things seem to come out at regular intervals – that claimed e-cigs have the potential to have severe adverse effects on the heart. It was a festering pile of fetid dingo kidneys then and, guess what, it still is.
Of course, you could easily be forgiven for the headline:
E-cigs: The incendiary truth… Just 10 puffs increases your risk of heart disease and they may even make smokers LESS likely to quit
Just ten puffs eh?

E-cigarettes effectively deliver nicotine
R&D, BAT
New research shows that e-cigarettes are as effective at delivering nicotine as conventional cigarettes, especially when used by experienced vapers.
‘Our results tell us that newer generation e-cigarettes are more effective at delivering nicotine than first-generation e-cigarettes. But, smokers need to be able to adapt their behavior in order to use them to best effect, at least with currently available products,’ says Dr Ian Fearon, Head of Clinical Research at British American Tobacco.
‘Being as effective as cigarettes at delivering nicotine in important,’ adds Dr Mitch Nides, because he says, ‘it could be a factor in determining whether smokers are likely to continue to use e-cigarettes in place of regular cigarettes.’ Nides, a veteran researcher in smoking cessation, is president of Los Angeles Clinical Trials, a US-based company that collaborated with BAT on this study.
The results are published in the American Journal of Health Behavior.
Bad science, accountability and courage
Clive Bates, Counterfactual
On 17 November 2016, the Iowa Attorney General, Tom Miller, gave a speech at the E-cigarette Summit 2016 (with biography) on e-cigarettes examining the claims of anti-vaping activists, and their scientific, ethical and legal basis. The full text of the speech is here: America Needs England (PDF). I reported an earlier speech here.
The speech should be widely read, especially in the United States. To facilitate an informed reading, I have reproduced the speech here, with some thematic subheadings, source links and illustrations [these are my additions].

Call to Action
Changing how YOUR Council sees vaping
Vapers in Power
There is only one council in the entire country with a decent attitude towards vaping.
Thanks to the work of Freedom to Vape we now know that the vast majority of councils lump vaping in with smoking, against the advice of both Public Health England and the Health and Safety Executive.
