Vapes Are 4x More Profitable

Vapes four times more profitable to convenience stores than tobacco products, according to a new analysis by a team at the University of Edinburgh. Small convenience stores are selling less tobacco, and the tobacco products they do sell are much less profitable to them than popular and reduced harm ecigs.

Bill Already Impacting Business

Despite not having completed its legislative progress through Parliament, the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is already having an impact on businesses and the retail sector. Vape brand Chill Brands has announced that the forthcoming June ban on single-use disposable vapes has reduced retail desire to stock the products.

Key Points

Question  What methods are people using to stop smoking in England and to what extent are they associated with quit success?

Findings  This survey study including 25 094 smokers aged at least 16 years found that e-cigarettes were both the most commonly used cessation aid (used in 40.2% of quit attempts in 2023-2024) and associated with the highest odds of successful cessation. By contrast, other aids found to be associated with increased odds of success in quitting smoking were used in less than 5% of quit attempts.

Meaning  These findings suggest that quit success rates could be improved by encouraging people to use more effective methods.

A call for science-based regulation of nicotine alternatives

Joseph Magero, Capital News

The recent comments from the Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni on vapes and nicotine pouches have stirred controversy—not for their insight but for their lack of scientific basis. After declaring last year her intention to “wipe out” these products, the PS’s remarks risk undermining the millions of Kenyan smokers in need of effective cessation tools.
