Two From Dave Cross, Planet Of The Vapes
UKVIA’s VAPRIL Awareness Campaign
The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) is gearing up to launch the ninth annual VApril campaign next month – the world’s largest vape awareness initiative. For almost a decade, the trade organisation tells Planet of the Vapes, VApril has supported adult smokers looking to quit by swapping from cigarettes to vaping. It says it has consistently provided evidence-based information, expert insights and practical guidance on making the switch.
Save Vaping Campaign Launched
The New Nicotine Alliance has launched a grassroots campaign to oppose the proposed public spaces vaping ban, saying there is no scientific evidence that second-hand vapour harms bystanders. In addition, the independent charity believes the move risks pushing ex-smokers to relapse and deterring current smokers from switching.
Fight the vaping ban.
Save Vaping
Save Vaping is a campaign organised by the New Nicotine Alliance to oppose the UK government’s proposal to ban vaping and heated tobacco use in public places. The campaign is aimed at adults who use these products, business owners, and anyone who cares about freedom, evidence-led policy, and harm reduction.
New campaign launched to challenge the proposed public vaping ban
New Nicotine Alliance UK
The New Nicotine Alliance has launched a new campaign website to encourage supporters to respond to the government’s consultation on a proposed ban on vaping in public places and to contact their MP. We have also produced a supporting press release explaining why the proposal is a bad idea.

Vaping Alarmism vs. Reality: Separating Hype from Science in the Nicotine Debate
Alan Gor
Australia’s academics are at it again.
The article tries to paint vaping as a kind of neurological trap designed to hijack the brains of young people. It uses dramatic language, a small laboratory experiment, and several questionable claims to suggest that colourful vape products are almost irresistible and therefore must be tightly restricted. But when you step back and examine the claims more carefully, much of the argument relies on exaggeration, misleading comparisons, and missing context.
Amanda Matos, World Vapers’ Alliance
There are moments when you read a policy proposal and genuinely wonder if reality has been completely ignored. The recent push to ban safer nicotine alternatives in the Philippines is one of those moments.
In the excellent analysis by Clive Bates, he dissects the reasoning behind these proposals with precision and, frankly, a level of patience they don’t deserve.
At first glance, the arguments sound very familiar and the same old story. To ban vapes, heated tobacco, and other non-combustible products in order to “protect public health.” But when you look a little closer, the logic starts to collapse.
EU Tax Hike Threatens the Swedish Miracle with Punitive Taxes
Juan Taborcia, Considerate Pouchers
Considerate Pouchers has aligned with a cross-border alliance of consumer advocates in an urgent appeal to Swedish officials to block the current draft revision of the EU Tobacco Excise Directive (TED). With the Working Party on Tax Questions scheduled for February 25, the proposed framework has shifted from a regulatory update to a direct financial strike against individuals seeking smoke-free alternatives.
The latest Presidency compromise on the Tobacco Taxation Directive does not mark a shift in direction. If anything, it confirms that the Cypriot Presidency is ignoring nicotine pouches and holding its course.
Despite extensive discussion and feedback, the proposed tax levels for nicotine pouches remain unchanged from earlier compromise texts.
Nordic nicotine industry to EU: Stop treating pouches like cigarettes
Snusforumet
Nordic nicotine manufacturers have warned the EU risks making a mistake in its nicotine policy, calling for more nuanced and carefully calibrated regulations that take relative risks into account.
In a joint letter sent to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the organisations explain that misconceptions about the risks of nicotine may paradoxically make it more difficult for European smokers to quit.

Carl Deconinck, Brussels Signal
Experts say that policies aimed at protecting the public against the negative effects of smoking have serious adverse effects, damaging public health.
Speaking at the World Nicotine Congress in Brussels on March 24, professor Douglas Ming Deng, of Yunnan University, highlighted that a lot of innovation in alternative smoking products, with far less adverse effects on health than traditional smoking, came from the US and China.
Vaping and the oral microbiome: changes observed, but no clear evidence of harm
Center of Excellence for the Acceleration of HArm Reduction (CoEHAR)
The relationship between e-cigarette use and oral health remains a topic of active scientific debate. While some studies have suggested potential risks, the underlying evidence is often fragmented and difficult to interpret.
A new CoEHAR systematic review, published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology, takes a closer look at one specific aspect: whether vaping is associated with changes in the oral microbiota — the complex community of microorganisms living in the mouth.
MP calls for evidence-based regulation for Vapes
Responsible Vaping APPG
The new Chair of the Responsible Vaping APPG, Euan Stainbank MP, has today called for more evidence-based regulation on vapes.
The APPG seeks to raise awareness of benefits of vaping as a smoking cessation tool, as adults who switch from tobacco to vapes are around twice as likely to stop smoking, gaining an average of 5-15 additional years of life when quitting cigarettes.
However, only 7.7% of tobacco smokers know that vaping is considerably less harmful than smoking.
Australia ramps up crackdown on illicit tobacco and vapes as black market booms
Ali Anderson, Clearing The Air
Australia’s government is preparing a major crackdown on the illicit trade in tobacco and vapes, as officials warn the problem has escalated into a serious organised crime issue.
Assistant Minister for Customs Julian Hill is expected to outline plans to give investigators stronger powers, including wire taps and expanded asset seizures, targeting criminal networks behind the trade.
IMF Publishes Call for Risk-Proportionate Nicotine Taxation
Kiran Sidhu, Filter
The International Monetary Fund has published a call for risk-proportionate taxation of nicotine products—in contrast to policies being adopted by many governments. The paper from the global financial institution, published earlier in March, said taxes on nicotine, alcohol and sugar products “should better align with the harm they cause.”
Written by economist Christoph B. Rosenberg, former deputy director of the IMF’s Communications Department, and tax policy expert Marius Van Oordt, the article discusses the history, present and implications of governments taxing consumer behavior.
U.S. Military Smoking Debate Spotlights E-Cigarettes and Nicotine Pouches as a “Bridge”
2Firsts
According to The Hill, Tobacco use among U.S. military personnel continues to exceed that of the civilian population, prompting renewed discussions about cessation strategies and harm reduction approaches within the armed forces.
During a forum held Tuesday(March 17) titled “Serving Those Who Serve, Embracing Tobacco Harm Reduction,” hosted by The Hill and sponsored by PMI US, senior defense health officials, members of Congress, and industry representatives addressed the issue of tobacco use among service members and veterans.
Two From Arielle Selya PhD
Australia’s Failed E-Cigarette Policy
Selya Behavioral Science Substack
From the Australian government’s website, the only legal way to obtain e-cigarettes is to obtain a prescription from a doctor or talk with a pharmacist who is willing to supply e-cigarettes. This effectively requires people to try – and fail – to quit with other conventional methods first, before a doctor or pharmacist is willing to even consider allowing someone to try e-cigarettes. The available e-cigarette options are limited in terms of nicotine concentration, flavor options, and variety in general, and pharmacists are under no obligation to carry or offer e-cigarettes.
Australia’s Policy Failure: Why Making E-Cigarettes Prescription-Only Is Problematic
I discuss Australia’s approach to e-cigarettes, which essentially limits them to prescription-only. I give 5 reasons why this is a problematic approach; how this overly restrictive regulation has created a violent illicit market; and compare how Australia has fared vs. New Zealand which embraces harm reduction with e-cigarettes.
THE VAPING “FORMALDEHYDE SCARE” EXPLAINED | SCIENCE OF VAPING
Global Forum on Nicotine
Why have some studies reported enormous amounts of formaldehyde and metals in vaping emissions? In this episode of Science Series with Roberto Sussman, we break down how those scary numbers can come from bad experimental conditions—especially overheating setups that don’t reflect how people actually vape. Roberto explains why “micrograms per puff” can be misleading, how to translate emissions into realistic daily exposure (based on typical puff counts), and how those totals should be compared against toxicological standards published by regulators.
A look back at how things have moved on or otherwise…
Who Is Misinforming Jane Ellison About E-Cigs?
From Dick Puddlecote:
In 1976 Prof Michael Russell wrote that ‘smokers smoke for the nicotine but die from the tar. When we urge people to stop smoking, we explicitly mean to quit smoking tobacco.
Quit and Smoking Reduction Rates in Vape Shop Consumers
A Prospective 12-Month Survey:
Here, we present results from a prospective pilot study that was aimed at surveying changes in daily cigarette consumption in smokers making their first purchase at vape shops. Modifications in products purchase were also noted. Design: Participants were instructed how to charge, fill, activate and use their e-cigarettes (e-cigs).
