Disposable bans will not work, says vape boss

Banning disposable vapes will not be “effective”, the boss of the UK’s largest tobacco firm has told the BBC.

Tadeu Marroco, chief executive of British American Tobacco (BAT), also said raising the smoking age would have “non-intended consequences”.

The government plans to outlaw disposable vapes next April as part of the “biggest public health measure in decades”.

BAT is the UK’s third-largest vape seller.

In the first few months of 2024, more than a dozen bills have been introduced in US states calling for a state-based Premarket Tobacco Product Application (PMTA) registry for alternative nicotine products such as vaping devices, heaters, and nicotine pouches. Although this type of legislation has already been passed in Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama, it’s crucial that other states recognize the unintended consequences and course-correct before it is too late.

Esco Bars is the new “bathtub gin.” A century on from alcohol prohibition and the same spirit that couldn’t kill spirits is failing against unregulated e-cigarettes. And just as the absence of sanctioned distillations made room for moonshine and rot gut, domestic vapes are being supplemented (to put it mildly) by products that are cheaper to make and more potent. But this time around, we don’t need a constitutional amendment to tackle the problem created by the last constitutional amendment.

In a recent survey conducted by Red C Research and Marketing in Ireland, one in five ex-smokers who had switched to vaping, said they were likely to revert back to smoking if flavoured vapes were banned. In fact, 75% of the participants said that in their opinion banning flavours was likely to lead to an increase in youth smoking.

As of last December, in Ireland it has been illegal to sell nicotine-containing vapes to individuals under 18 years old. Yet despite these age restrictions, plans for additional limits on the flavours permitted for sale are underway.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill

The Government introduced the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to Parliament on Wednesday 20 March. Powers being granted include those to issue £100 on-the-spot fines in addition to the maximum £2,500 fine which local authorities can impose on retailers. Some outlets reported the £100 fine was for children vaping, but this is not the case. The Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) has offered its opinion on the new legislation.

Why do American women who use smokeless tobacco have 10 times the risk for mouth cancer compared with American men who dip and chew tobacco?

This question arose in 2016, when Annah Wyss of the National Institute of Environment Health Science and 20 government-funded coauthors reported that American men had no excess mouth cancers associated with dipping or chewing tobacco (Odds Ratio, OR = 0.9), while American women, who mainly used powdered dry snuff, had ten times the risk (OR = 9) (here).

Handing out vapes in UK emergency departments helps smokers quit, study finds

Giving out free e-cigarette starter packs in hospital emergency departments to people who smoke helps more people quit, according to research from the University of East Anglia.

The trial offered advice, an e-cigarette starter pack and referral to stop  services to people attending an emergency department for any reason, to help them to stop smoking.

Six months later, almost one in four people given the starter packs said they had quit smoking. Those who received the packs but didn’t quit altogether were more likely to have reduced the number of cigarettes they smoked.

Police deny claims of 10 teenage deaths linked to ‘magic mushroom’ vape

Police have not received any reports over claims that 10 teenage boys died after being addicted to a vape liquid laced with a drug known as ‘magic mushroom’.

Describing the allegations as baseless, Kuala Selangor police chief Supt Ramli Kasa said such claims could potentially confuse the public if continuously spread with unverified information.
