Will Study Linking Vapes With Heart Failure Survive Scrutiny?
Kiran Sidhu, Filter Magazine
It’s been a busy few weeks for health scares around vaping, with media distortion of a cancer-adjacent study and an unjustified claim about seizures from the World Health Organization. New research suggesting that vaping could lead to heart failure has also triggered headlines in the United States and United Kingdom.
This research, unveiled by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) in April and presented at the ACC conference in Atlanta that month, found that “people who used e-cigarettes at any point were 19% more likely to develop heart failure compared with people who had never used e-cigarettes.”
Experts Affirm that Nicotine is Innocent of Smoking-Related Diseases;
Tobacco Combustion Is Primary Cause of Health Problems
MENAFN
Dr. Garrett McGovern, General Practitioner specializing in addiction medicine said: “It is necessary to support the concept of harm reduction as a means of combating the health risks caused by traditional smoking.” Medical professionals and public health experts acknowledged the increasing shift in smokers’ transition from traditional cigarettes to using smoke-free products including e-cigarettes, heated tobacco, nicotine pouches, and oral nicotine. Dr. McGovern, further added that there is a growing popularity of e-cigarettes, as one of the innovative products that contribute to reducing the risks of burning tobacco.
Introduction to the Report: No Smoke, Less Harm
Tobacco Harm Reduction
In a world where the consequences of tobacco use are hampering the health of society, the need to come up with innovative strategies to effectively neutralise these impacts is very crucial. Indeed, Sweden remains a country that is a guiding case for the success of tobacco harm reduction. This report considers the “No Smoke, Less Harm” approach by reviewing Sweden’s use of smoke-free alternatives that contain nicotine and how that contributed to a much better improvement in the health outcomes of its citizens than other places in Europe.
UK Tobacco and Vapes Bill: a Misfire and a Backfire
Clive Bates , The Counterfactual
New UK policies and legislation on smoking and vaping have been widely hailed as groundbreaking and game-changing. That is wrong. Closer examination shows they are likely to do more harm than good – a misfire and a backfire.
In short, the UK government has got its priorities and legislation all wrong. Its anti-smoking measures will misfire, and its anti-vaping measures will backfire.
Anti-vaping professor makes shock admission at Australian inquiry
Ali Anderson, Clearing The Air
An anti-vaping professor has made a shock admission at a public inquiry that the only known deaths from vapes are from the batteries exploding.
Professor Emily Banks was grilled at the Australian senate inquiry for the Therapeutic Goods and Other Legislation Amendment (Vaping Reforms) Bill.
Graphic Health Warnings on Vapes and Oral Nicotine Pouches,
Is There Any Evidence to Support Them?
TUKO MEDIA
The Ministry for Health in April 2024 announced that it was inviting submissions from the public on proposals to apply graphic health warning labels on tobacco products – which, according to the draft graphic warnings shared by the Ministry, include nicotine products like vapes and pouches
Graphic Health warnings currently appear on cigarettes in Kenya, but there is concern by public health and smoking-cessation campaigners that warnings on tobacco-free nicotine products could prevent smokers from switching to safer alternatives
Scientific evidence indicates that vapes and nicotine pouches are lower risk than tobacco products as they do not burn tobacco – which causes the majority of harm from smoking. Independent research shows that vaping is one of the best tools for helping smokers quit

UKVIA’s Trip to China
The UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) Director General has visited China to train some of the world’s leading vape companies on the UK’s regulatory landscape. John Dunne advised the Electronic Cigarette Industry Committee of the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce (ECCC) on UK laws and the best practice to prepare for any future new regulations amid youth access and environmental concerns.
China Recognises Need For Compliance
During a visit to China, John Dunne, the Director General of the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) interviewed the CEO of China’s ICCPP Group (Voopoo). Mr Everest told him that “compliance is the bottom line of business”, as part of a “wide-ranging discussion about the vape industry”.

In a move that will result in a public health crisis for Canada, Minister of Health, Mark Holland, announced in March that he plans push through the regulations announced three years ago to ban all flavours of vapour products, except mint, menthol and tobacco. However, Canadians who vape and their allies have made it clear that this is unacceptable.
“If the flavour ban goes through. We can guarantee a few things. Flavours will continue to be available in Canada.
Dr. Brad Rodu, Tobacco Truth
Earlier this year, Medscape, which describes itself as “the leading online global destination for physicians and healthcare professionals worldwide,” invited me to participate in a series of short continuing medical education (CME) programs on tobacco harm reduction (THR). Medscape clearly disclosed that the series was sponsored by Philip Morris International, but the programs were firewalled; faculty were not in contact with or influenced by the sponsor.
Topics included, among others, an examination of nicotine, and the differential risks of combusted versus smoke-free tobacco/nicotine products.
Youth vaping rates higher in Australia than other countries
Dr. Colin Mendelsohn, Tobacco Treatment
If Australia switched from the prescription-only regulations to an adult consumer model, it would make legal vapes more readily available for adults and reduce the black market which is supplying young people.
Furthermore, youth vaping continues to rise sharply in Australia. In the National Drug Strategy Household Survey 2022-23, the current vaping rate in 14-17-year-olds increased from 0.9% in 2016, to 1.8% in 2019 to 9.7% in 2022-23.
Let’s shift the paradigm in tobacco policy
Maurice Ward, Minn Post
As the founder of JIIVE (Justice Impacted Individuals Voting Effectively) and leader in my community, I had time to reflect on the complexities of our criminal injustice system, a political apparatus that has tricked us into believing our vote does not count, as well as societal norms.
The Minneapolis City Council passed an ordinance that sets a minimum price for cigarettes at a staggering $15. While the intention may seem noble — to deter smoking and improve public health — it’s crucial to question whether such measures truly address why “justice impacted individuals,” who are under constant social-economic stress, smoke.
Global Forum on Nicotine
In today’s episode GFN Interviews host Brent Stafford swapped his usual interviewer’s seat to join Joanna Junak to discuss all things #GFN24, the current global backlash to tobacco harm reduction from tobacco control proponents, and what he’s learned since beginning to cover the world of tobacco harm reduction with Regulator Watch.
South Africa’s Tobacco Bill process faces scrutiny as experts uncover flaws
Biz Community
As we wrap VApril, a month dedicated to education and awareness about vaping, the Vapour Products Association of South Africa (VPASA) recommits itself to keeping the public informed about the ongoing process for South Africa’s Tobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill (the Tobacco Bill). Most recently, several public hearings about the Bill took place nationwide. The hearings served as a vital platform wherein stakeholders could engage in dialogue with the government and provide an understanding of the potential impact of the proposed legislation on public health and consumer choice.
Rep. Keith Ammon, New Hampshire Union Leader
MASSACHUSETTS struck yet another blow against science and logic in March when the Massachusetts Supreme Court announced its decision to uphold a law passed by the Town of Brookline in that state to ban tobacco and vapor products for any person born in the 21st century — for the rest of their lives. This ban means that adults separated in age by years, months, or even one day will live under different sets of laws regarding their freedom to purchase tobacco and vape products.
This total ban on vaping products also represents a dangerous setback for smokers who are trying to quit tobacco, one that undermines established science on smoking cessation.
