New Minister Responsible for Vaping
A new minister, Ashley Dalton MP, has been appointed to take responsibility for vaping following the sacking of Andrew Gwynne MP for his offensive WhatsApp group comments. As the tenth person in this post in ten years, hopes are that she will offer a period of continuity in office – but her non-scientific background presents challenges for tobacco harm reduction advocates.
£9 million-worth of Products Seized
Over £9 million worth of illegal vapes seized in the UK last year, according to the latest findings obtained by the UK’s largest online vape retailer Vape Club. The industry experts warn Trading Standards new on the spot fines ‘don’t go far enough’ as two illegal vapes were seized every minute.
Happy Birthday NNA
The New Nicotine Alliance (NNA) celebrates a decade of championing evidence, vapers and users of other alternative nicotine products. The original trustees formed the educational charity when they met while fighting against the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive, alongside other European consumers. It remains the leading independent nicotine advocacy and education organisation.
EU Commissioner Tells Porkies
The World Vapers’ Alliance has strongly condemned the recent statements made by EU Tax Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra, who, it says, falsely claimed that vaping “kills like ordinary cigarettes” and justified higher taxes on vapes and flavours based on misleading arguments.
A full guide to vapes: Post 2.
Roberto Sussman, Roberto’s Substack
This is the second Substack post of a series of posts describing how vapes work, the aerosol they generate, their properties, their optimal regime of operation, overheating conditions and dry puffs, as well as comparisons with tobacco smoke and other aerosols. Post 1 Understanding vape aerosols can be found in this link Understanding how vape aerosols form, operate and can be tested provides the knowledge to understand their pleasurable usage, their toxicity profile and relative safety with respect to tobacco smoke and other aerosols and pollutants.
Nicotine not carcinogenic, Israeli expert tells Filipino doctors
Manila Standard Business
Nicotine is not carcinogenic and does not cause heart disease, an Israeli cardiologist said, urging smokers to consider switching to heated tobacco or vape products if they cannot quit. Professor Reuven Zimlichman, director of The Brunner Cardiovascular Research Institute at Tel Aviv University, said nicotine is addictive but does not harm the body like the thousands of chemicals produced by burning tobacco.
UNDERCOVER VIDEO: Fruity cannabis pouches widely available, nicotine pouch options remain restricted
Christopher Oldcorn, Saskatchewan Standard
A growing number of Canadians are turning to fruit-flavoured cannabis pouches, which are now being sold at cannabis stores. Meanwhile, nicotine pouches in Canada remain restricted to pharmacies and come only in mint, menthol, or flavourless varieties. Undercover video obtained by the Western Standard shows just how easy it is to buy fruit-flavoured cannabis pouches.

France’s Disposable Vape Ban: A Misguided Health Gamble
Michael Landl
France’s recent decision to ban disposable e-cigarettes is a misguided step that threatens to undermine progress in tobacco harm reduction. While well-intentioned, this move ignores scientific evidence and could have severe unintended consequences for public health and individual freedom. The ban demonstrates a disregard for scientific evidence. Numerous studies have shown that e-cigarettes are significantly less harmful than traditional cigarettes and can be an effective tool for smoking cessation. By removing one of these options, French lawmakers are pushing vapers back to more harmful tobacco products or into the arms of the black market.
Bulgaria Bans Vapes While Smoking Rages On
The World Vapers’ Alliance (WVA) strongly criticizes the Bulgarian Parliament’s recent unanimous vote to implement a blanket ban on vaping products. This ill-conceived decision threatens public health and ignores scientific evidence supporting vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking. Bulgaria has one of the highest smoking rates in the world, and it has not gone down since the first Eurobarometer survey in 2007. Despite this alarming statistic, the government has chosen to ban all vaping products, including nicotine-free options, both in retail outlets and online. This decision was made without proper consultation and is likely to fuel the black market for unsafe products.

Misinformation stops young adults switching from smoking to vaping, study finds
Young adult smokers who wrongly believe vapes are more harmful than cigarettes are less likely to switch to vaping, a new study shows. The research, published in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research, found the majority of young adults aged 23 or 24 inaccurately believed vaping is ‘as bad or worse’ for health than smoking. Those who understood the reduced health risks of vapes were more likely to have switched from smoking to vaping after six years, the researchers found.
Bulgarian parliament votes unanimously for blanket vape ban
The Bulgarian government has passed a total ban on vapes at its first reading in Parliament. Members of parliament from all political parties voted unanimously – by 197 votes to none – to ban the import, trade, marketing and sale of vapes and similar devices. The proposed law applies to disposable and reusable vapes sold either from retail outlets or online, and includes nicotine free products. The amendments to the Tobacco and Related Products Act were tabled by parliamentary healthcare committee chair, and leader of the ruling GERB-UDF party, Kostadin Angelov.

Termination of Tobacco Harm Reduction Continuing Medical Education by the Accreditation Council
Dr. Brad Rodu, Tobacco Truth
The full scope of tobacco use and related risks to health are misunderstood by all health professionals. Deficits in health professionals’ knowledge have been documented by recent studies (1,2,3). Throughout 2024 there were three separate efforts to implement continuing medical education (CME) programs to address these information deficits. Unfortunately, tobacco prohibitionists weaponized CME accreditation to terminate all of them.
False and misleading statements about vaping
European Tobacco Harm Reduction Advocates (ETHRA)
On Thursday, February 6th, EU Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero, Clean Growth and Taxation) participated in a meeting of the European Parliament’s Subcommittee on Tax Matters. At the meeting, French MEP Pierre Pimpie, asked the Commissoner about the future of the Tobacco Excise Directive. In his response Commissioner Hoekstra made the extraoridinary and false statement that “Smoking kills, vaping kills”. Such a statement is extremely dangerours and damaging to the understanding of the relative risks of vaping compared to smoking, particularly when it is delivered in a meeting with policymakers.
IQOS: How Does It Work and Where Can You Find One?
Jim McDonald, Vaping 360
For some people who smoke, vaping doesn’t seem to work well as a replacement. It may simply be an experience too unlike smoking for them to get used to. After all, no vaping product actually tastes like burning tobacco. And with vaping, there is no defined beginning or end to the experience: smokers light a cigarette and then put it out a few minutes later, but with vaping it can just go on and on.
10-year study to shed light on youth vaping
GOV.UK
Groundbreaking research will investigate the long-term health effects of vaping on children, supporting major plans to tackle youth vaping and create a smoke-free generation. The £62 million research project into adolescent health, funded by UK Research and Innovation, will track 100,000 young people aged 8 to 18 years over a decade, collecting data on behaviour, biology and health records to understand what affects young people’s health and wellbeing, including the impact of vaping.
UKVIA statement on Department of Health survey into the impact of youth vaping
UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA)
The UK Vaping Industry Association welcomes the news that the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is launching a ten-year research project into the long-term health effects of vaping on young people’s health, alongside wider influences on adolescent health. DHSC said the study is one of three sets of research being commissioned by the government, alongside the launch of England’s first ever public health marketing campaign to educate children on vaping harms.

Public Health Misinformation – Jonathan H. Adler
Most Americans understand that smoking is harmful. It remains a leading cause of preventable death in the United States. A growing number of Americans do not understand that vaping and non-combustible tobacco products are far less risky. In a recent article, Jacob James Rich and I explored why this might be.
Don’t penalize smokers for trying to quit
Amanda Hagerman
A new tobacco product that’s 90% safer or greater than smoking cigarettes can help countless Arizonans quit. But unless Arizona lawmakers pass a crucial bill to ensure this safer alternative isn’t taxed, the same as conventional cigarettes, the very Arizonans who need it the most will bear the brunt of the consequences.
