Teen Smoking Unconnected to Cinematic Smoking
Brad Rodu, Tobacco Truth
In a July report (here), the CDC Office on Smoking and Health asserted the following about tobacco use in movies:
“The Surgeon General has concluded that there is a causal relationship between depictions of smoking in the movies and the initiation of smoking among young persons.”
“…the decline in the total number of tobacco incidents [in top-grossing movies] has not progressed since 2010.”
Letter to the University of Limerick President and Students Union
Irish Vape Vendors Association
Today it was announced by the University of Limerick that their new smoke-free policy defines “smoking” as including “the use of electronic cigarettes (…) whether or not the deliver a nicotine dose or not.”The IVVA is committed to seeing the delivery of policies on vape products and their use, which are evidence based. One of the biggest obstacles to this delivery is the continued conflation of smoking and vaping; treating both product categories the same, despite vaping being far safer than tobacco smoking and a proven pathway to smokers becoming smoke-free.
IBVTA Response to Euston Station Incident
Independent British Vape Trade Association
Following news of an incident at Euston Station, involving an e-cigarette, it is important to remember that it is the battery that vents (explodes) and never the device. This is however a very serious issue, particularly as these incidents are easily avoided. With this in mind our members follow detailed guidance on battery safety, this is the advice and information we expect them to provide to customers. In addition to this, we have produced a poster that members can display in their businesses.

Nicopure Labs Files a Notice of Appeal in their Case Against the FDA Deeming Rule
Nicopure Labs
TAMPA, FL, August 30, 2017 —Nicopure Labs, LLC, the leading manufacturer of premium American-made e-liquids, filed a Notice of Appeal in the court case “Nicopure Labs, LLC et al. V. FDA et al.” in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. The R2B Smoke-Free Coalition is joining Nicopure in this appeal. Together, they are appealing the court decision made by Judge Amy Berman Jackson on July 21 to push for an objective judgment and to stand up for the rights of vapers and the industry as a whole.
On E-Cigarettes, CDC Should Learn from UK’s NHS
Alex Berezo, American Council on Science and Health
E-cigarettes are “effective in helping people quit smoking” and “95% safer than smoking.”* Additionally, there are “no health risks to bystanders.” What evil, conniving, greedy, Big Tobacco-loving, propaganda-spewing group of shills says that? The UK’s National Health Service (NHS).

Determination of Selected Chemical Levels in Room Air and on Surfaces after the Use of Cartridge- and Tank-Based E-Vapor Products or Conventional Cigarettes
MDPI, The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health
Overall, our results indicate that under the study conditions with the products tested, cumulative room air levels of the selected chemicals measured over 4-h were relatively small and were several-fold below the current occupational regulatory and consensus limits.

Fake news: is smoking really increasing in Australia?
Simon Chapman, Doctor Portal, The Medical Journal of Australia
ON 14 August, 2017, The Australian newspaper ran a story guaranteed to go viral. The headline screamed: “More smokers lighting up, despite the costs”. The journalist, Adam Creighton, who has, grotesquely, written about tobacco control being like Nazism, reported on a claim being made by Dr Colin Mendelsohn, “an expert in public health at the University of NSW”, that:
“an unexpected standstill in the national smoking rate since 2013, combined with rapid population growth, has pushed up the number of regular smokers by more than 21 000”.
No evidence that e-cigarettes are leading teens to smoke
Dr Mendelsohn, colinmendelsohn.com.au
An analysis of 5 studies in the UK provides the strongest evidence yet that e-cigarettes are not leading young people to smoke. The study analysed 5 separate surveys in the UK between 2015-2017 of 60,000 young people aged 11-16 years. The study was published today in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.
Fears over e-cigarettes leading to smoking for young people unfounded – study
Sarah Boseley, The Guardian
Young people who try e-cigarettes are not more likely to take up smoking as a result, according to a substantial new study. Public health experts have been divided over e-cigarettes. Some believe they will help millions quit their deadly tobacco habit, while others are convinced they are little more than a stalking horse for the tobacco industry.
Young People’s Use of E-Cigarettes across the United Kingdom: Findings from Five Surveys 2015–2017
MDPI, The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health
In summary, surveys across the UK show a consistent pattern: most e-cigarette experimentation does not turn into regular use, and levels of regular use in young people who have never smoked remain very low.
Anti-vaping agitprop at the Guardian
Christopher Snowden, Velvet Glove, Iron Fist
An article in the Australian edition of the Guardian has been annoying vapers but the person responsible says she can’t understand why. We have come across Melissa Davey before. Simon Chapman was quick to take her under his wing when she took a Masters in ‘Public Health’ at Sydney University a few years ago.
Nicotine in the News – 28 August
Harry Shapiro, Nicotine Science & Policy
Two contrasting items this week about the idea that celebrities who are either seen to be endorsing drug use or actively campaigning against it, have any influence on decision-making among young people.
