Public has been mislead about e-cigarette risks, says UVic researchers

Pamela Roth – Victoria News

By the time Cole Cranmer was 16 years old, he was smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.

He had difficulty running up a hill, but he didn’t care, the addiction had taken a strong hold.

It wasn’t until Cranmer was unable to go outside for a cigarette due to a sports injury to his knee that he tried a vapourizer given to him by his brother. After a few months, it turned into a hobby. Soon Cranmer dropped cigarettes altogether.

The health hazards of vaping are overblown

The Globe and Mail André Picard

It’s time to stop vilifying vaping. The scientific evidence is mounting that:

E-cigarettes are not a gateway drug that entice young people to take up smoking;

Vapour devices are at least as effective as other nicotine replacements products such as patches and gum in helping smokers quit;

Vapour from e-cigarettes contains significantly fewer toxins than smoke from tobacco cigarettes;

Second-hand exposure to vapour is far less harmful than exposure to second-hand smoke.

Will “Heat-Not-Burn” E-Cigs Kill Off Vaping?

Rich Duprey, Motley Fool

The future of cigarettes may be “smoke free,” as Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM) says, but it is a new platform of electronic cigarettes using heat-not-burn technology that may also kill off vaping as we know it. Not your father’s e-cig: Traditional e-cigs and personal vaping systems (PVS) heat a nicotine-infused liquid to create a vapor that is inhaled.

Trump invited by Rep. Hunter to consider repealing or suspending Ecigs regulations

Jérôme Harlay, Vaping Post

In a letter he sent to the White House, Rep. Duncan Hunter, asks President Trump to act for vapers and to consider either repealing or suspending e-cigarette regulations. The President, on the day of his inauguration, already paused the regulatory process for some “minor” cases. Now he is urged to take concrete action in favor of US vapers.

How hearing about harmful chemicals affects smokers’ interest in dual use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

PubMed, Pepper JK, et al.

Substantial harm could result from concurrent cigarette and e-cigarette use (i.e., dual use) were it to undermine smoking cessation. Perceptions of chemical exposure and resulting harms may influence dual use. We conducted a probability-based phone survey of 1164 U.S. adult cigarette smokers in 2014-2015 and analyzed results in 2016. In a between-subjects experiment, smokers heard a hypothetical scenario in which cigarettes and e-cigarettes had the same amount of harmful chemicals or cigarettes had more chemicals than e-cigarettes (10× more, 100× more, or chemicals were present only in cigarettes).

FDA Addresses Synthetic Nicotine

Convenience Store Decisions

E-liquids made with synthetic nicotine will NOT be regulated.

Generation Labs, the makers of proprietary TFN Nicotine – a non-tobacco derived synthetic nicotine –reported an update from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that addresses the question of synthetic nicotine, confirming that e-liquids made with synthetic nicotine will not be regulated.

Things Are Starting To Happen Very, Very Fast

Frank Davis

I think that things are going to start to happen very fast now. Very, very fast. Nothing much has been happening for the past 10 years. It’s been a period of stasis, with a mounting overburden of laws ensuring that the stasis would become ever more static. And now everything has started to change. Yesterday Donald Trump withdrew the USA from the TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership), and said he would re-negotiate NAFTA. He also told the EU to forget its plans for a European army.

E-Cig Industry Fights Vape Tax That Killed One-Third Of State Vendors In 2016

Daily Caller, Steve Birr

The vaping industry is fighting off a crippling 40 percent tax on their shops that is responsible for eliminating one-third of electronic cigarette businesses in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Vape Association organized an opposition rally Monday morning in the state capitol building in demonstration against the onerous tax and to petition lawmakers to lower it to a more financially reasonable figure. Close to one hundred e-cigarette shops have closed since the tax took effect Oct. 1 after securing passage in the summer.

Child Nicotine Poisoning Prevention Act of 2015

Jérôme Harlay – PGVG

The Child Nicotine Prevention Act of 2015 has passed the different steps of approbation and has reached President Obama’s desk for signature at the White House. It may become a law in a close future. But what does it mean? The regulation expert, Particia Kovacevic, goes into the detail of this regulation….

There’s a rigorous public health debate

Over how dangerous e-cigarettes really are – Molly Rosbach

The degree of concern over increased marketing of e-cigarettes depends on how concerned people are over the potential health risks — and there’s a lot of tension in that debate.

On one side are vaping proponents, who see e-cigarettes and vaping products as a safe, effective way to quit smoking.

On the other are public health officials who feel e-cigarettes are just as dangerous as traditional cigarettes and represent a gateway drug for teens…

Malaysia has estimated 1 million vapers

There are  1 million vapers in Malaysia, according to an article in Gulf News.

“The business is growing very fast because there are many people trying to convert from tobacco smoking to vaping,” according to the region’s largest retailer’s, Vape Empire, co-founder Muhammad Sharifuddin Esa, adding that his business has expanded to 57 locations since it opened just two years ago.
