Vape, don’t smoke – expert

Marewa Glover

A professor of public health has claimed smoking rates would be dramatically reduced if misinformation wasn’t being spread about e-cigarettes.

Massey University professor of public health Marewa Glover says smokeless products like vapes are the key to reducing smoking rates, following a mere 0.6 percent decrease in smokers over the past year.

“These new smokeless products that are much less harmful, they are like a flaming torch, you give everyone one of them, stand them at the top of the glacier and we would see it melt much faster,” she said.

E-Cigs Cause No Long Term Lung Harm

Ashtray Blog

For the first time, we have a study which looks at the effect of vaping on the lungs over the long term. The result? No negative impact on the lungs over a period of several years.

Most vapers are ex-smokers, and could be expected to have some lung damage. To get round this problem, the researchers decided to seek out vapers who had never smoked.

This wasn’t easy – at the time just 0.01% of people who have never smoked, vaped!

No health concerns in young adults who never smoked tobacco

TC has created a generation of vaper haters

Simon Clark, Taking Liberties

Following the implementation of a workplace vaping ban in New York State producers wanted to debate the issue on the not unreasonable grounds that what happens in New York (the smoking ban, for example) could be adopted in the UK.

The item was scheduled for Wednesday but on Tuesday it was pushed back 24 hours. During that time my opponent changed. It was originally going to be an occasional Channel 4 presenter I’d never heard of.

UK taxing the poor

Tobacco Reporter

UK campaigners have responded with anger to the announcement of another increase in tobacco duty.

“This is the second increase this year,” said Simon Clark, director of the smokers’ group Forest. “Tobacco duty is already punitively high. A further tax hike discriminates against smokers who are less well off. Once again the poor are being sacrificed on the altar of public health.

Ontario Liberals Move To Crush Vaping

Brent Stafford, Regulator Watch

It’s war, that’s what representatives from the Canadian vaping industry say following the Ontario Liberals sudden and shockingly obstinate legislative position on vaping.

Dashing to capitalise on recreational cannabis, the Ontario Liberals introduced Bill 174, which strategically wraps tobacco, cannabis and vaping together into a single law in order to limit consultation and handcuff opposition to other sections of the bill.

Long-term e-cigarette use

Shows no health concerns – Dr Colin Mendelsohn

Long-term e-cigarette use shows no health concerns in young adults who never smoked tobacco

The first long-term study of daily e-cigarette use shows no health concerns in relatively young users who had never smoked tobacco, according to new research presented today at the 2017 Congress of Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) in Sydney.

Have banned vaping and flavored tobacco – Steven Greenhut

The 2014 death of Eric Garner spurred Black Lives Matter protests. In fact, Garner’s final words — “I can’t breathe” — became a rallying cry for the movement designed to combat overly aggressive police behavior. Garner was approached by police for allegedly selling “loosies” — individual cigarettes sold without the proper tax stamps. He died after being held in a chokehold.

Andriukaitis lashes out at tobacco industry

Andriukaitis also said tough legislation is on the way for new electronic devices which have entered the EU market.

“The tobacco industry is doing a lot in the use of new electronic devices. They are using cigarettes with heating instruments. They are new and they are not covered by directives,” he said. He warned about stronger legislation against e-cigarettes.

“I see possibilities to encourage our agents to look into electronic cigarettes, and how to go in the direction of stronger regulation […] stopping advertising and online sales,” he said.

Technology Can Reduce Tobacco Harm

Peter Mugabo

In a push to provide a new frontier to a smoke free world, key stakeholders in the tobacco industry held a workshop in Naivasha – Kenya to discuss how new technologies can reduce tobacco harm and accelerate the journey to a smoke-free world.

The conference, themed “Tobacco harm reduction: Towards a smoke free world” identified the urgent need to quickly adopt and promote reduced-risk alternatives aimed at accelerating the transition out of harmful tar-based cigarettes.

Stakeholders measures for smoke-free

Stakeholders have called for quick adoption of new technologies in order to reduce tobacco harm and accelerate the journey to a smoke-free world.

Can Vaping Reverse Disease

Ashtray Blog

Harm reduction. That’s been the key argument for switching from e-cigarettes to vaping. But what if vaping didn’t just to lead to harm reduction but harm reversal?

Professor Polosa has been studying the effect vaping has on patients with blood pressure and asthma, and kindly agreed to answer a few of our questions.

What is it in smoking that leads to higher blood pressure? The interaction between smoking and blood pressure (BP) is complex…

To vape or not to vape?

The RCGP position on e-cigarettes – Dr Richard Roope

Smoking tobacco is the single largest cause of preventable illness and premature death, being responsible for around 100,000 deaths a year in the UK1 . Smoking accounts for 27% of all cancer deaths, 35% of all respiratory deaths and 13% of all circulatory disease deaths. It is in this context that smoking cessation is one of the most effective health interventions. Up until recent years the main tools to support those trying to give up smoking have been nicotine replacement therapy, and oral bupropion or varenicline

Waffle about Press Coverage

Alan Beard – Why Oh Why

As we are all too aware, the accuracy and narrative across the various media outlets varies enormously in general terms, but more specifically related to Vaping.

I cannot recall many other divisive or polarised topics in my lifetime, that emulate this, with the possible exception of climate change(I am an agnostic with insufficient knowledge to voice a considered opinion), maybe Industrial relations(UK) in the 70’s-80’s qualify here also.
