Clearing Up Myths and Misperceptions

Derek Yach, Foundation For A Smoke-Free World

I was quite surprised when the World Health Organization (WHO) recently issued a statement mischaracterizing the mission of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World, and wrongly suggesting the Foundation doesn’t comply with Article 5.3 of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

As someone deeply involved in the development of the FCTC as a cabinet director and executive director at WHO, I know a bit about the FCTC. And it is clear the goals and objectives of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free World are squarely in line with the FCTC and especially Article 5.3.

The level of Support Required for New #ecig Switchers and a few suggestions

Alan Beard, Why Oh Why

None of what I shall be writing here is rocket science or even original content, apart from a wacky idea that I shall advance towards the end of this blog. After this quite encouraging but slightly misguided RCGP conference summary was published,it triggered an instant response from me in the comments section

NZ health ministry releases statement about e-cig use for smoking cessation

Diane Caruana, Vaping Post

In March 2011, the Government of New Zealand adopted the Smokefree 2025 goal for the country. In line with this campaign, last April Associate Health Minister Nicky Wagner announced that e-cigarettes would be legalized. He said that in doing so New Zealand is adopting a low risk approach, while scientific evidence about the the safety of e-cigarettes is still being developed.

Leading e-cigarette advocate says lifting Australia’s vaping ban could save lives

RN Breakfast, Fran Kelly

The Senate Inquiry into the use and marketing of electronic cigarettes is continuing. So far the Committee has backed the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s decision to ban the sale of liquid nicotine for e-cigarettes in June last year, and the Health Minister Greg Hunt insists the ban won’t be reversed on his watch.

Renewed push to legalise e-cigarettes

Sky News

Smoking e-cigarettes, also known as vaping, is becoming a growing trend in Australia despite being illegal. The government has a ban on importing liquid nicotine and has ruled out lifting it despite an ongoing parliamentary inquiry.

Vaping nicotine: ‘not on my watch’

Megan Haggen, AJP.com

In an interview with Triple J Hack reporter Sarah McVeigh, Mr Hunt said he felt the push for allowing, regulating and supporting the use of e-cigarettes was coming from tobacco companies. He also said he had been advised by the head of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (Dr John Skerritt) today that “there’s no strong evidence at all that this is a pathway of people quitting”.

Trump’s FDA Still Beholden To Democrats?

Carl V. Phillips, The Daily Vaper

Following the 2016 elections, some vapers were optimistic about changes at the FDA Center for Tobacco Products. While there were no promises or specific evidence to base this on, the feeling was that regime change would make a difference, as the FDA would no longer answer to the fairly anti-vaping Democratic Party leadership. The recent response by FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb to anti-vaping remarks by Senator Chuck Schumer leaves some serious doubt about that.

Wrigley Sues A Second Juice Co.

Mawsley, Planet Of The Vapes

POTV revealed that the Wrigley company took legal action to protect its intellectual property in June, against a company producing an eLiquid called “Joosy Fruit Gum”. The chewing gum firm has signaled its clear intention to go after every vape business trading on its branding by taking a second juice maker to court.

On this Day…2016

A look back at how things have moved on or otherwise…

The smoker rebellion

LegIron, Underdogs Bite Upwards

Will there be one? I have wondered if we can honestly be arsed to bother. We’re a pretty chilled crowd, we smokers, even the ones who haven’t been tricked into permanent guilt by the Holy Antismoker Inquisition.

It’s a trick, yes. The guilt. It’s a way of controlling you. Keep you feeling guilty and repentant and then offer you forgiveness if you live your life as instructed instead of doing it the fun way. Come on, you’ve seen it over and over again. Isn’t it obvious by now?

Look, it’s simple. If you smoke and you don’t like it, well stop fucking doing it. It’s not brain surgery. If you stop smoking and decide all smokers are evil filthy bastards because you’re not doing it any more, kindly find a convenient high building and jump off it because you have become what you used to be scared of. You’re the monster now.

Let’s call time on stupid vendors

Fergus Mason

A few weeks ago I expressed some annoyance at vendors who were, in my opinion, being stupid. In this particular case it was a rash of morons selling “Pokéjuice”, a trademark-busting product that’s also an absolute gift to those who claim the industry is targeting children. I made some comments on Facebook and reported a couple of vendors to Trading Standards, but mostly what I did was annoy stupid people. I’m not exactly a stranger to annoying people, and it’s not like upsetting the stupid ones troubles my conscience, but it is pretty frustrating to raise problems like this and be met with a wall of baffled, stupid annoyance.

I don’t believe for a minute that any of the mainstream vapour product makers, or even the dreaded tobacco companies, are “marketing to children”, but it’s getting increasingly difficult to say the same about some of the more stupid independents. By all means make ice cream flavoured e-liquid.
