Expert reaction to e-cigarettes and cardiovascular risk

Science Media Center

In this study, the authors compared 16 e-cigarette users with 18 non-users and compared the two groups for heart rate variability and markers of oxidative stress.  Heart rate variability is normal and healthy, but activation of the adrenaline system in our bodies can decrease this and this may be linked with heart disease.  On two of the four measures of heart rate variability, there were no differences between the e-cigarette users and the non-users and on two measures, the groups differed.

Vaping in Ireland – Gillian Golden interview

Black Note / Fergus Mason

Most of the action in the e-cigarette debate is taking place in the USA and UK. Britain is moving towards a pro-vaping position, with all the major health organizations recognizing its potential as a harm reduction technique and the National Health Service recommending e-cigs to smokers. The USA is still going down the prohibitionist route, with every level of public health treating vaping as just one more part of the “tobacco epidemic.”

New rule announced on the advertising of electronic cigarettes

Committee of Advertising Practice’s (CAP)

Today we’re announcing the creation of a new rule in the CAP Code prohibiting the advertising of unlicensed, nicotine-containing electronic cigarettes in some non-broadcast media. The new rule reflects changes to the law which came into effect in April 2016 since when ads for some e-cigarettes have been illegal in a wide variety of media.  However, the CAP Code does not reflect the law by default and we subsequently conducted a consultation to examine how best to reflect the law in our Code.  Having reviewed the responses to that consultation, we are satisfied that it can reflect the law in our Code.

Independent Vape Industry Criticises New Advertising Restrictions

Independent Vape Industry Trade Association (IBVTA)

Responding to the Committee of Advertising Practice’s (CAP) new code and guidance for the advertising of vape products, the Independent British Vape Trade Association (IBVTA) has criticised new marketing prohibitions they believe will impose unnecessary restrictions on their members’ legitimate business activities, and make it harder for smokers to find out about products that are at least 95 per cent less harmful than the tobacco they currently smoke.

Nicopure Labs Responds to Report on Reshaping the U.S. Tobacco Policy

Nicopure Labs

Nicopure Labs, LLC, the leading manufacturer of premium American-made e-liquids, releases a statement in response to the report on reshaping the U.S. tobacco policy.

The report – authored by Clive Bates, director at Counterfactual, Eli Lehrer, president and co-founder of R Street Institute and David Sweanor, adjunct professor of law at University of Ottawa – highlights eight federal strategies to fight smoking, promote vaping and ignite a public health revolution. It comes as misleading information and strict regulations surround the vaping industry.

New Study Casts Serious Doubt on Claim that E-Cigarettes Lead to Youth Smoking

The Rest Of The Story / Michael Siegel

A new study published online ahead of print in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Research pretty much blows out of the water the hypothesis that youth e-cigarette experimentation causes kids to progress to cigarette smoking.

Why That Study Of Teenagers In Hawaii

Does Not Show Vaping Causes Smoking – Jacob Sullum

Smoking among American teenagers has continued to decline, reaching the lowest rate on record last year, as more and more of them experiment with vaping. These opposite trends seem inconsistent with warnings that the rising popularity of e-cigarettes will encourage consumption of the real thing. Still, it’s possible that the smoking rate among teenagers would be falling even faster if e-cigarettes had never been introduced.

Why We Need to Invest—and Reinvest—in Prevention – Prevention Institute

There’s a growing consensus among policymakers and health planners that if we want to improve health outcomes and lower costs we must change community conditions in ways that support health and prevent illness and injury before they occur.
