Thailand’s Disease Control Department is spreading misinformation about vaping

Two from Diane Caruana, Vaping Post

While vapers in Thailand have been speaking up about the local unreasonable vaping regulations, the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department is insisting that e-cigarettes pose serious risks to one’s health, and should not be used as smoking cessation tools. The deputy director-general of the Public Health Ministry’s Disease Control Department, Dr Assadang Ruay-archin, has released a statement dismissing a report that the Public Health Ministry had distorted an analysis about the safety risks of e-cigarettes.

Taiwan Government moving towards a total vaping ban

Diane Caruana, Vaping Post

As the Taiwanese government is considering a legislation that would ban the manufacture, importation, sale and advertising of e-cigarettes, the Taiwan Vape Association (TVA) is doing its best to negotiate for more reasonable regulations. Taiwan currently regulates Nicotine-containing products under the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, while non-nicotine products are unregulated. However, according to an article by ECigIntelligence the executive branch of the Taiwanese government, the Executive Yuan, is considering an amendment to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act equating to a total ban on the sale of all vaping products whether they contain nicotine or not.

Taiwan moves towards a total ban on ‘vaping’

Duncan DeAeth,Taiwan News

The Executive Yuan of Taiwan is considering an amendment to current Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act, which would make the manufacture, importation, sale and advertising of e-cigarettes completely illegal. Vaping Post has reported that there are about 30 companies in Taiwan currently dealing in e-cigarettes, and vaping accessories. If the current administration carries through with the new legislation, all of these companies would be put out of business. Currently products containing nicotine are regulated according to the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act, while products which do not contain nicotine remain unregulated.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) evaluation of a Novel Tobacco Vapor (NTV) product

Hirokazu Ichitsubo, Science Direct

The impact of using a Novel Tobacco Vapor (NTV) product on indoor air quality (IAQ) was simulated using an environmentally-controlled chamber. Three environmental simulations were examined; two non-smoking areas (conference room and dining room) and one ventilated smoking area (smoking lounge). IAQ was evaluated by (i) measuring constituents in the mainstream NTV product emissions, (ii) and by determining classical environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) and representative air quality markers. Analysis of the mainstream emissions revealed that vapor from the NTV product is chemically simpler than cigarette smoke.

Stop-smoking drug hailed as ‘the most effective medication’ for ditching cigarettes,

increases the risk of a heart attack by up to 34% AND is linked to self-harm, study finds

Alexandra Thompson, Daily Mail

A stop-smoking drug increases users’ risk of a heart attack by up to 34 percent, new research suggests. Varenicline, which is prescribed under the brand name Chantix in the US and Champix in Europe, significantly raises users’ chances of being hospitalized or visiting an emergency room for a cardiovascular-related event even if it is taken for the recommended 12 weeks, a Canadian study found. The drug is also linked to self-harm and depression in older users, the research adds.

Australian Vape Advocacy Group Legalise Vaping Chats With EcigClick

The Ongoing Fight To De-Criminalize Vaping In Australia

It seems crazy to us more fortunate vapers that vaping in Australia with a nicotine based e-liquid could see you locked up in jail for 2 years and fined $45,000. Ridiculous as that sounds to us – it’s the hard truth. That really is the ‘punishment’ for vaping in Australia and with the seemingly stubborn [some may say stupid] Government and ‘experts’ reluctant to legalize vaping – one advocacy group is fighting to remove the ban.

‘Heated tobacco’ products aren’t e-cigarettes, says maker

The Nation, Thailand Porta

Tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris International (PMI) insists that its “heated tobacco” product is different from e-cigarettes.

Thai law prohibits e-cigarettes being sold here or brought in. A recent petition on chang.org sought a review of the ban and urged that the e-cigarette be reclassified a “controlled product”. Media reports have queried whether PMI’s heated-tobacco product is an e-cigarette. Philip Morris (Thailand) managing director Gerald Margolis said on Friday that its product heats tobacco well below the point of combustion, rather than burning the tobacco.

Will FDA Ban All Non-Tobacco Vapor Flavors?

Carl V. Phillips, The Daily Vaper

The FDA intends to soon launch its war on vapor product flavors. As recently reported, the FDA has filed a notice that makes clear their intention to limit flavor options. The previous article noted that the publicly available abstract and even the title are thick with anti-flavor rhetoric, referring to “Kid-Appealing Flavors.” That abstract contrasts with parallel FDA filings about possible regulations of nicotine levels, e-cigarette batteries, manufacturing quality control and filing requirements, which are all matter-of-fact and professional in tone.

Fake Ecig Mouth Cancer Fear

Mawsley, Planet Of The Vapes

Some may raise their eyebrows in disbelief when they read the details presented by Doctors Nguyen, Kitzmiller, Nguyen, Nguyen and Chi Bui. In a comprehensively not-comprehensive-at-all study, they take a couple of random Vietnamese men at face value and believe everything they’re told. See if you can spot the flaws…

“Many [vape devices] are commercial manufactured to look like conventional cigarettes or cigars,” the learned doctors write, in Oral Carcinoma Associated with Chronic Use of Electronic Cigarettes, “but some are manufactured to resemble everyday items.” They state that some are disguised as pens – but that sofa you’re sitting on could well be another vape device, those cunning designers!

To ban or not to ban: Health ministry in a fix over e-cigarettes

Priyanka Sharma, India Today In News

The union health ministry is unable to decide whether to ban e-cigarettes completely or either to regulate its sale and purchase like other cigarettes. Around four months ago, three committees were formed by the senior officials of health ministry which has already passed the directives to ban the e-cigarettes completely.

Ethical Standards in Tobacco Control are “Height of Hypocrisy”

Kevin Crowley, Vaping Links

Powerful public health officials do not want money directly from tobacco giant Philip Morris International (PMI) due to fears it may compromise their ethical standards. The ethics they insist, in fact, scream for tobacco companies to adhere to, do not apply to them. Grants offered by Foundation for a Smoke-Free World (Funded by PMI) were met with the “height of hypocrisy” and denounced as if the devil himself had taken out the middleman; smokers.
